Meet Ukiira Coffee

We recently connected with Ukiira Coffee and have shared our conversation below.

Ukiira, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

Resilience, that unwavering force that keeps us moving forward, comes from a tapestry of experiences and beliefs, woven intricately through our lives and work at Ukiira Coffee. At the heart of our resilience is the rich legacy of our family, especially our grandfather, an Ex-Senior Chief. His journey of determination and community focus set a powerful precedent for us. Seeing the strength in our family history, we’re emboldened to face any challenge, carrying that inherited fortitude within us.

But resilience isn’t just a solo endeavor; it thrives in the sisterhood and shared passion we cultivate. Our journey at Ukiira Coffee is a testament to the collective power of women supporting women. We lean on each other, drawing from our diverse experiences, embracing our vulnerabilities, and transforming our setbacks into stepping stones. This isn’t about perfection; it’s about the courage to rise after every fall and viewing challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. It’s in this shared spirit that our resilience is continually shaped and strengthened.

Moreover, our resilience is deeply rooted in the soil of Kenya, and in the stories of the coffee farmers we work alongside. Their dedication, hope, and strength, despite the hardships, are woven into every aspect of Ukiira Coffee. They remind us daily that resilience can transform even the toughest beans into the most aromatic brews, mirroring our journeys.

Above all, our resilience is fueled by the impact and purpose of our work. Ukiira Coffee isn’t just about creating exceptional coffee; it’s about brewing hope, fostering community development, and continuing a legacy of education and empowerment. Every cup we produce carries this mission, anchoring us firmly, even amidst life’s most tumultuous storms.

So, for those seeking to build their resilience, remember, it’s a journey of embracing your heritage, fostering strong bonds, learning from the land and community around you, and being driven by a purpose that extends beyond yourself. Resilience is about finding strength in the collective spirit and the enduring power of shared goals and dreams.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Imagine a cup of coffee that doesn’t just wake you up, but wakes up your senses to a world of possibility. That’s Ukiira Coffee. We’re a company born from a love of Kenyan coffee beans and a passion for making a difference in the world. Our story stretches back generations, rooted in the legacy of Ex-Senior Chief Moses Mukira, a Kenyan pioneer who planted both coffee trees and a passion for education in Nyeri County, Kenya. It’s from him we inherit our resilience and our mission to brew hope, one cup at a time. His legacy lives on in every cup of Ukiira, connecting you not only to the rich flavor of our land, but also to the hardworking farmers and vibrant communities we support.

But Ukiira is more than just a taste of Kenya. It’s a commitment to making a difference. We’re most excited about the impact we make beyond the coffee. Every purchase directly supports initiatives like the Kagongo Primary School Scholarship Program and the Mweiga Primary School sanitary pad drive. Witnessing children go to school with confidence and dignity sparks pure joy in us, reminding us that a small cup can create a ripple effect of positive change.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
As Ukiira Coffee, the journey has been paved with many lessons and triumphs, and three key qualities stand out as the most impactful:

1) Unwavering Passion and Purpose: This wasn’t just about wanting to sell coffee; it was about igniting a movement of empowerment and social change. Our deep-rooted passion for Kenyan coffee, the legacy of our grandfather, and the communities we support kept us focused and determined, even when things got tough.
2) Collaborative Spirit: We knew we couldn’t do it alone. We are building a strong team of passionate individuals with diverse skills and perspectives. We continue to foster an environment of trust, open communication, and shared ownership, which allows us to leverage each other’s strengths and overcome challenges together.
3) Relentless Adaptability: The entrepreneurial landscape is dynamic, and we learned to embrace change as a constant companion. We were open to pivoting strategies, experimenting with new initiatives, and continuously learning from mistakes. This agility allowed us to navigate unexpected challenges and seize unforeseen opportunities.

Advice for Early-Stage Journeys:

1) Ignite your passion: Find your spark, that driving force that ignites your spirit and makes you excited to jump out of bed each morning. Whether it’s a specific cause, an artistic ambition, or a unique business idea, let that passion be your compass.Take time to hone your narrative, the “why” behind your venture. Share your story authentically and connect with others on an emotional level.
2) Embrace the power of collaboration: Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share your passion and complement your skillset. Don’t be afraid to delegate, ask for help, and celebrate each other’s successes. Remember, true strength lies in unity and collaboration
3) Never stop learning: Develop a growth mindset and embrace the journey of learning. Be open to feedback, willing to adapt, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Remember, flexibility and openness are key to thriving in an ever-changing world.

We, the women of Ukiira Coffee, are living proof that with the right qualities, skills, and mindset, you can turn a small idea into a force for positive change. We wish you all the best on your own journey, and remember, we’re always here to cheer you on!
