We recently connected with Umer Zaman and have shared our conversation below.
Umer, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Honestly, I didn’t find my purpose in one clear moment — it came in pieces, through experiences that tested me, broke me, and slowly rebuilt me.
I think I started to feel it most when I realized that my voice could be used for more than just melody — it could be a means of healing, connection, and remembrance. The first time someone told me that a nasheed I wrote helped them through a dark time, something shifted in me. That’s when I understood: my purpose isn’t just to create — it’s to serve through what I create.
And as I’ve grown, especially as a father, I’ve come to see that purpose isn’t always loud or dramatic. Sometimes it’s in the small things — teaching your child a line of dhikr, sharing a moment of stillness with an audience, or writing something that feels honest.
My purpose is still unfolding, but I know it’s rooted in faith, family, and using whatever God gave me to bring light into people’s lives — even if it’s just a little at a time.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a nasheed artist based in the U.S., and my work centers on creating spiritually uplifting music that speaks to the heart. My goal is to remind people—especially young Muslims and families—that faith can be beautiful, artistic, and deeply emotional. I create nasheeds in English, Urdu, and Arabic, and my songs often explore themes of healing, purpose, connection to Allah, and the joys and struggles of everyday life.
What’s most exciting for me is using lyrics as a form of da’wah that’s accessible, especially for the next generation. I often include my young son in my projects, and a big part of my brand is family-friendly content that resonates with parents and children alike. I want our kids to grow up hearing words of remembrance and love for the Prophet ﷺ in a way that feels familiar and joyful.
Right now, I’m focused on expanding my reach through live performances, educational workshops, and collaborations with other artists and organizations. I’m also working on a series of nasheeds and videos designed specifically for children and families, with the hope of building a long-lasting library of meaningful content. My new childrens album is called “Growing Up.”
At the core of everything I do is intention — to serve, uplift, and create art that leaves a legacy of light.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been: intentionality, emotional honesty, and consistency.
1. Intentionality – From the start, I knew I didn’t just want to make music — I wanted to create something that meant something. Being intentional with every lyric, visual, and project has helped me stay rooted, even when things got overwhelming. For anyone just starting out, I’d say: don’t chase trends. Know why you’re doing what you’re doing, and let that be your compass.
2. Emotional Honesty – I learned early on that the more real I am, the more people connect. Whether I’m writing about fatherhood, pain, or faith — if it’s coming from a true place, it will resonate. So my advice is: don’t be afraid to be vulnerable. Your voice matters because of your story, not in spite of it.
3. Consistency – This one is not glamorous, but it’s everything. There were many moments where progress felt slow — but showing up consistently, even when motivation was low, is what moved things forward. For anyone in the early stages: don’t wait to feel “ready.” Just start, and keep showing up. Momentum builds with movement.
More than anything, believe in the value of your voice — and trust that when you pair purpose with perseverance, doors will open in ways you never imagined.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes, I’m always looking to connect with talented and creative individuals who are passionate about meaningful work. Whether you’re a sound engineer, vocalist, videographer, or someone with a unique skill set and a heart for storytelling — I’d love to hear from you.
I’m especially interested in working with people who see value in faith-inspired content and want to help grow the Umer Zaman brand in a way that’s impactful and rooted in purpose.
