Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Urvi Selarka. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Urvi , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I get my work ethic from my deep passion of pushing boundaries in design. I’ve always been inspired by the things around me, and I love creating pieces that haven’t been seen before. Having studied at FIT and showcasing at NYFW, I’ve set high expectations for myself and my brand, “URVI.” The desire to keep growing, improving, and offering something unique to my audience is what fuels my commitment to hard work and excellence.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
The journey began in Mumbai, India. My love for colors and textiles got me into fashion. After gaining experience in women’s wear, I moved to New York to pursue my Master’s in Fashion Design at FIT, which helped shape my identity as a designer. Showcasing my work at New York Fashion Week was a turning point that led to the launch of my own label, “URVI.”
The brand focuses on creating artistic, red carpet looks for women who want to stand out. What excites me most is designing pieces that are not only visually striking but also empowering. I draw inspiration from my surroundings, always aiming to create something mesmerizing and unique. Currently, I’m working on expanding my brand’s reach. I’m also exploring new fabrication techniques for future collections, which is a thrilling direction for me.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most impactful qualities in my journey have been attention to detail, enjoying the process, and continuously experimenting.
-Attention to detail matters because even the smallest elements can transform a design.
-Enjoy and respect the craft throughout the ups and downs of the creation process.
-Experimenting opens doors to growth and discovery, leading to unique, memorable designs.
For those just starting out, I’d advise focusing on the details that set your work apart, finding joy in every stage of creation, and always trying something new. These habits can make your journey fulfilling and distinctive.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My family has been the most instrumental in helping me overcome challenges and develop the skills I needed to be successful. From the very beginning, they encouraged my passion for fashion. Their unwavering belief in me gave me the confidence to take risks and stay committed, even when things were tough. My family has always provided me with guidance, motivation, and a sense of stability, allowing me to focus on my craft and push myself creatively. Without their constant support, my journey would never have been possible.
