We were lucky to catch up with Valeria Silva recently and have shared our conversation below.
Valeria , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Being the only one in the room to me was never a block, but at the same time I can’t say it was inspiring. It’s actually sad. But unfortunately I was used to it since I was a kid. Good thing it’s that it wasn’t a reason for me to stop whatever I was doing or feel sorry for anything. I was as effective and creative as any other person there. Today, I am not the only one in some rooms anymore, and I said some, not all of them. I would say things are getting better, but let’s be honest, while we are still questioning this kind of situations it means that it’s still happening a lot.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Valeria Silva, I was born and raised in Brazil. In 2014 I was granted a scholarship to study Los Angeles, so I decided to move to the US and pursuit my career in Acting. I have been in the Film industry since then and it’s mostly what I do now, besides the production side of me, that it’s something super natural and I also love doing it.
I have a travel show that my co-producers and I created, wrote and produced. We have one whole season ready and we just signed with two new streaming channel in Brazil and that’s really exciting and it’s called “Proxima Parada” – “Next Stop”.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Creativity, Honesty, Problem solving. A good advice would be take care of your mental Health, trust your instincts and believe on the things you do.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Emotion and Mental. My number ones obstacles.
These two things together are the only thing that can make me stop and pause.
Taking care of my mental health and being able to identify my emotions so I can be verbal about them and not internalize it’s something that helps me 100%.
