We recently connected with Valerie Arguello and have shared our conversation below.
Valerie , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I draw my resilience from the combination of personal and professional challenges I’ve faced throughout my life. Running a pet care business, especially one that emphasizes quality and a home-like environment, has taught me the importance of adaptability, patience, and perseverance. On a personal level, my love for animals and the responsibility I feel toward their well-being has given me a strong sense of purpose. Whether it’s managing day-to-day operations or ensuring that every animal in my care feels safe and loved, I’ve learned that resilience is about showing up, even when things get tough, and trusting that dedication and passion will guide me through.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m the founder of Pet Care by Val, a boutique-style pet care business located in Los Angeles, California, that focuses on creating a home-like, family-oriented environment for pets. We specialize in doggy daycare, boarding, basic grooming, and concierge services, but what sets us apart is our attention to detail and the level of care we provide. I have a background as a vet tech, which gives me a unique perspective on the needs of the pets we care for. Whether it’s administering medication, organizing custom outings, or providing medical boarding for senior dogs, we treat every pet like family.
What I find most exciting about my work is the trust that our clients place in us, knowing that their pets are in safe and loving hands. We recently expanded our facility, adding new indoor play areas and a puppy playground for small dogs. We also offer unique services like dog treadmill training, subcutaneous fluid administration, and even TVs in our lounge areas so pets can feel relaxed and comfortable, just like they would at home.
We’re currently in the process of launching new services, including leash training and personalized outings like early morning hikes and beach trips. As we continue to grow, I remain focused on providing exceptional care to each pet, ensuring that quality always comes before quantity.”
Feel free to adjust it further depending on how you’d like to highlight certain aspects of your work!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are adaptability, empathy, and persistence.
Adaptability has been essential because working with animals means no two days are ever the same. Whether it’s managing different pet personalities or adjusting to unexpected challenges in the business, being flexible has allowed me to stay grounded and keep the business moving forward.
Empathy is at the heart of what I do. Understanding the needs of both pets and their owners, and creating a space where they feel safe and comfortable, has helped me build lasting relationships with clients. This emotional connection drives everything we do at Pet Care by Val.
Persistence has been crucial in overcoming obstacles, especially when starting and growing a business. There were many times when things didn’t go as planned, but staying determined and believing in my vision is what got me through those moments.
For those early in their journey, my advice is to actively practice these skills. Adaptability can be developed by embracing change and learning to pivot when necessary. Empathy can grow by truly listening and understanding the needs of your clients or audience. Persistence comes with experience, so don’t get discouraged by setbacks—treat them as learning opportunities. Keep pushing forward, and always stay true to your vision.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes, I’m currently building a team that includes trainers, dog sitters, and dog walkers. I’m looking to collaborate with dedicated and experienced individuals who share a passion for providing high-quality pet care services.
