We recently connected with Valerie Carter and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Valerie , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
God gave me my purpose long ago. I always knew I was capable of doing something big, but God is always pushing me out of my comfort zone. After 30+ years in the healthcare field, I thought I was fully fulfilling my purpose; however, God was using that time to prepare me for this season I am in now. When my son came back from his third tour in Iraq, I was heartbroken. Let’s just say he went in one way and came back another way. His transformation broke me. As I went to get my son help, I found that it was rather difficult getting help for people with disabilities. That’s when God challenged me and my husband to begin L&V Enterprise Resources, Inc. Our nonprofit connects people with disabilities to great resources to help them achieve their goals, get the right help the need, and to connect them to people who can help with job training and education. My purpose is to help others, and this is just another avenue God has been preparing me for.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
First and foremost, I am a wife, a mother, and a grandmother. Beyond that, I am the proud owner of a medical consultant firm, president of a Houston-based nonprofit, and I own my own radio station. As the owner of VK Consultant Group, LLC, I have enjoyed helping a multitude of physicians start up and restructure their practices for over 20 years. In this time, I have helped failing businesses bounce back and thrive. One of my greatest achievements in all of my years is that during the pandemic, we created strategies that allowed many practices continue to stay afloat!
While I have enjoyed providing my services, my heart really resides with my nonprofit. The nonprofit my husband and I began in 2020, L&V Enterprise Resources, Inc., is dedicated to connecting people with disabilities in the Houston area to quality resources that will help them achieve their goals in areas such as job training, counseling, education, and more. This really spurred all of my other ventures because I began The Love & Victory Show with Val, LLC as a way to promote the nonprofit. Since I began that podcast, it has taken on a life of its own. What was once a podcast is now a popular radio show! As we grew, I decided The Love & Victory Show with Val, LLC should be on its own radio station, so this year we began LVWITHVAL-RADIO, LLC. You can see a lot has happened in such a short span of time, but it is only because I love sharing my heart with everyone, In this adventure, I realized a lot of people are hesitant to make big or bold moves in their careers, so I also began VK Career Conversation, LLC this year. VK Career Conversation, LLC is focused on having career-oriented conversations so people from all sorts of backgrounds can get some perspective from professionals who have been in their careers for a long time. I may be a busy woman, but I know what I am doing is what I am supposed to be doing.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say three skills and qualities that have impacted me the most have been: trusting my gut, pursuing my dreams, and learning everything about my craft. In my life, these three things have really helped me stay afloat in circumstances that others would have drowned in. I can’t say if any one of these is better than the others, but they are each important in their own, unique way.
Trusting your gut really has to do with being able to trust yourself. There will always be difficult circumstances and trials we will have to face in our lives, but there are instances where we know deep down that something is off. We know this because despite what someone may tell us, we still feel unsettled about the situation. Unfortunately, you can’t always take people at their word, so you have to look out for yourself by learning to trusting your gut.
Next is following your dreams. This isn’t something people typically teach unless it’s an inspirational message because everyone’s dreams are unique to themselves. Everyone may be encouraged to pursue their dreams, but no one tells you how to navigate the mess that comes with it. I think it’s because everyone frames the idea of a “dream” as this far off notion that’ll maybe magically happen one day. To make your dreams come true, you have to put in the hard work. No one can do what you do the way that you do it, so start seeing yourself as someone who is capable of making your dreams a reality. Once you do that, then you can follow your dreams. How can you follow a dream that isn’t even tangible in reality? That’s why you have to lay the groundwork to make it a reality.
Lastly, I’d say don’t be afraid to learn everything. Anyone can have a job, but not everyone can have a career. If you want to progress and move up in the ranks or have the confidence and competence to run your own venture, you have to learn everything about your craft. Learn everything that happens on the back end, what happens on the front end, and everything in between. Learn how to do payroll and how to deal with customers and clients. Take the time to understand how marketing works. You don’t have to master it all but be familiar enough that when you have others making claims about how to improve or increase the quantity or quality of what you do that you can discern who is being helpful and who isn’t.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
We are always open to different people working with us, but each brand requires specific attention to who we partner or work with. Regarding VK Consultant Group, LLC, I am looking for healthcare professionals and hospitals who are looking to start up, expand, or increase the quality of their business. I have been working with doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants for over 30 years in the healthcare world with all sorts of services. My goal is to take off the load of running a business so physicians can focus on their passion- helping patients. I am always on the lookout for clients who are looking to operate under a growth mindset because the healthcare world is always changing, and we have to learn how to adapt.
As for L&V Enterprise, Inc., if you have a heart to help the disabled community, we have the ears to listen! One of the ways we like to engage with the Houston community is to host events that raise money and awareness for our nonprofit so we can continue our mission to connect the disabled community with resources to maximize their opportunities to participate in areas such as job training, counseling, and education. Whether you want to help us in an event, become a sponsor, or would like to make a one-time donation, our doors are always open!
My media companies LVWITHVAL-RADIO, LLC, The Love & Victory Show with Val, LLC, and VK Career Conversation, LLC are more focused on people who love to make a difference in life altogether. If you love what I have to say or are simply a big fan of our radio station, we are looking for people to support us by becoming an ongoing sponsor. These brands are built on authentic conversations that seek to navigate all of life’s facets with confidence and humility. We are looking for people and companies who want to make the world a better place. Whoever you are, if your services or products help or encourage others, reach out to us and let us know!
