Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Valerie Tamez~Avila. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Valerie, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
I stay positive and always stay in control of my emotions when dealing with negative people in my face trying to bring me down. No one controls my emotions and reactions but me. I keep me head up high and focus on what I can control. I’ve been told some horrible negative things from people I once admired. I promised myself that I would never give up and never make decisions about my life because of others people negativity and hate. My faith helps me move forward and stay positive.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
In my late 20’s I was an alcoholic and most of my family members had heart disease and horrible eating habits. I hit rock bottom and became sober, it’s been 22 years since I’ve had a drink. This sent me on a journey of learning about health, food and baking. I learned how to cook and bake in healthier ways. Baking was a challenge and it took me many years to learn. My baking is alternative and I offer custom orders to meet special diatery restrictions. All of my baked goods are made with 100% organic white spelt(ancient grain) it’s less irritable and carries alot of nutrients. I use organic cane sugar and all of my baked goods are vegan. Everything is made from scratch with simple clean products.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Listen to your customers. Be nice and provide good customer service.Advice I would give is make sure you pay yourself. Run your cost several times take time to do your research on your supplies. Price your products correctly check and compare what your competition is charging. Hustle your word of mouth to promote your business.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed I remember to relax my shoulders and breath. Slowdown and take some time to regroup and think clearly what my next step will be. I practice yoga and listening to music helps me when I feel overwhelmed.
