Meet valerie Vicens

We recently connected with Valerie Vicens and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Valerie, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

How did I develop confidence and self-esteem you ask; I think I still am to be honest. I spent 7 years as a girl scout leader teaching young ladies to build theirs, realizing I myself needed to learn too. This past year opening up my own business forcing me to come out of my shell and seeing all the people I have made a positive impact on definitely helped me understand my worth. I believe confidence is something you always need to work on and be mindful of those around you.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

The past 20 years I focused on raising my children. I homeschooled my girls & built a homeschool group for local teens. With my girls growing I realized it is time for me to follow my dreams. My partner & I opened “The Funk”, we aim to be a community shop in Tarpon Springs where everyone feels welcomed. We are mental health focused using sound & tattoo therapy. The Funk is home to many local artists in our eclectic shop & we hold monthly themed night markets to bring vendors & our community together. We are a dry establishment and encourage more natural lifestyle with our in-house life coach. Our monthly calendar is full of art classes, fitness workshops, sound journey events, welding classes, SUP full moon yoga events, oddities workshops & our community night markets. We just recently relocated, we are having our Grand re-opening August 24 4-8pm, we will have a DJ, Wicked Women Dance Troupe who fundraise for Wheelchairs for Children at our event. Our next big night market will be Friday 13th in September. There will be many vendors, art & food, tattoo specials & entertainment.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Running a small business is not easy at all, so getting creative is extremely important. Answering questions definitely is not one of my best qualities, ha-ha. I love connecting people so planning our night markets for the community to grow, I would say is one of good qualities. Communication and trusting yourself is important. Follow your heart & believe in yourself do not give up!

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

This past year I learned how to accept help. I’m used to being the “helper” so having others help me was definitely growth for me. Releasing that control over everything, that was not easy. Admitting I needed help or just understanding the joy those have in helping. I’m not failing by asking for help or just accepting it. I’m not weak, in fact I feel more confident & stronger, trusting others made me feel more accomplished than trying to do it all .
