We recently connected with Vanessa Blanding and have shared our conversation below.
Vanessa, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from having amazing parents and strong women I admire in my family. I’ve watched them all succeed and advance through many hardships, while standing firm in their faith in God. They showed me through the years that no matter what you go through, as long as you keep faith in God and yourself and work hard you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. This encouraged me to develop my own personal relationship with God that has stood the test of both time and trials. No matter what I’ve gone through I can say it has made me stronger because I know I am not alone- I have a strong spiritual team and family that supports me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I go by Vanessa the Designer and I am founder and the creative mind behind The Butterfly Modiste. As a fashion designer, my job is to create innovative fashion looks that highlight the timelessness my brand represents but also keep up with the ever-changing fashion world. I have had the honor of showcasing my designs in London, UK & New York City recently and these experiences have truly elevated my vision of not only what fashion means to the world but what my brand contributes to the scope of fashion. I want all women to embrace their uniqueness as part of the collective consciousness; we are all connected but we are here to leave our individual impressions on this earth. As a custom designer, I value working in tandem with fierce fashionistas that have their own vision of how they want to show up in the world. They bring their unique ideas to me and I bring them to fruition.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe commitment is the most important quality for those starting out in entrepreneurship. Commit to the end goal and stay the course no matter what obstacles come your way. The journey of maintaining a business is a lot like running hurdles in track and field; you need the endurance to run and you have to know when to jump. There will be many challenges and that leads to the next important skill- adaptability. Business is always changing and you must adapt to needs as they arise in order to remain competitive in your industry. Another important factor is education. Always remain a student of life, even as a master of your field. There is always room for growth and change.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking for new faces to work with. I am accepting partnerships with fashion models, stylists, jewelry and shoe designers. If you are looking to network and join forces, let’s connect!
