Meet Vanessa Bong

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vanessa Bong a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Vanessa, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose when I took the time to understand myself and also gave myself time. It also helped me to believe that I had something important inside of me to share with the world. Some key things that I focused one were; taking time to reconnect with the things that brought me joy, reconnected with what I did as a child, and thoughts about service, what I would naturally love to do for others. Practical things I did were, ask people questions about their journey, did a lot of journalling and I also read books and travelled a lot. I was really privileged to have chance to do these things!

When I gave myself time to explore those things within myself, I learnt that I love to create things that bring joy to people’s everyday lives. That lead me down a career change towards surface pattern and textile work. It was a shift, but I was really grateful that I found something that actually brought me so much satisfaction.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a Textile Designer based in Melbourne Australia. I love to make products that surprise and delight people. Bringing joy with art is my favourite thing.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three skills have to be reflection, being able to stop and reflect on your own journey wants and desires. Being able to care and choose yourself. And to not compare yourself and accept the journey that you are on!

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always looking for businesses that need a spark of creativity to bring their idea to life. Especially companies that are looking for fun and bright graphics.
