Meet Vanessa Gelacio

We were lucky to catch up with Vanessa Gelacio recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Vanessa, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

I used to base my self-esteem on my performance at school and based on how many boys liked me. but those are all flawed principals, I am still trying to deconstruct social premises instilled in me because I like to question everything, I find confidence attaining knowledge and I make a list of what my core values are and make choices based on that. I also have a great therapist that I work with and we do cognitive restructuring to treat BDD and it has opened up the doors to so many questions I never even thought would be necessary to advance in life but they have hugely impacted my self esteem and confidence.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Well, the most exciting part of my job as an actress and singer are the people, places and things you get to meet.
One day I can find myself taking a baking workshop for a shortfilm and the next I can be learning Flamenco with a coach for a movie, or sitting in my desk composing the lyrics of a score…I never know where I will land. I’m still an up and coming artist so, I have a day job that pays the bills in between projects, and I embrace every single moment of it. I like to approach things with gratitude.
Right now I’m excited about 3 projects I have coming up, one of them is a shortfilm called “The Tenant” directed by Pamela Matew, another one is my first Lead role in a feature called “E Pluribus Unum” Directed by Rency Punnoose and the third one is another feature called “The Shadow of the Sun” Directed by Andrew Kappas where I got to play alongside Danny Trejo! which was like a dream come through.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

*Stay positive, focused and delulu is the first one! I will not be here if I didn’t believe the impossible could happen! I can not count the amount of times I’ve seen people quit their dreams or being stopped from start pursuing them because they lacked those 3 qualities.

*The second one if the willingness to confront the unknown, there have been so many moments where I know what I want, I know what step to take, I take that step, and then I can’t see a clear path but I just choose to take that leap of faith! and everything always turns out good.

*The third skill that I’m consciously trying to get better at is the “sense of wonder”, I live in a city where the best of best become jaded because everything is so accessible and I know I can get more out of life if I become more enthusiastic about the things my brain has chosen to ignore because they are so common.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Yes! This year I would love to network more, get out of that isolated shell and find more inspiration and motivation in working with others and creating with others, particularly I’d love to find a singing partner that plays an instrument and shares passion for bohemian Spanish songs or alternative folk songs. I’m also looking for a theatrical agent that helps me get in doors I have not been able to get myself in. And I am always open to reading a good script and seeing how I can help wether it is Producing, Directing, Acting, etc…
