We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Vanessa Martinez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Vanessa below.
Vanessa, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from my family, most of us have a small business. They all run different businesses, from cleaning services, machine shop, convenience store, a cafe and even a hair salon. I’ve seen how hard it is to keep up with everything and how discipline you have to be! There’s so much that goes in to it, even when I’m not working I’m constantly thinking of new ideas.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hello! My names Vanessa and I’ve had my small business for about three years now. Since my last interview I’ve felt that my small business has grown and developed so much! I have focused a lot on my city, specially the Houston Astros. The fan base has grown so much and seeing so many people be proud to rep their city is really cool, it’s even more exciting seeing my customers wear my stuff.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I myself still think I need a lot to work on, it’s not as easy as people may think. You have to have so much discipline, making sure you’re not slacking off but also finding a good balance so you’re not always just working. It’s important to give yourself some free time to clear your mind. Consistency is another thing, with social media and making content. Last thing I would say is confidence, to put yourself out there! Just go for it, people always judge or have things to say. As long as you’re proud of yourself and happy with whatever you’re offering than that’s all there is to it!
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I think this is something I struggle with a lot! The creative process is sometimes so overwhelming, constantly trying to come up with new ideas or trying to put out content can be very hard. That’s why I think taking a break to clear your mind is so helpful, find some hobbies, read books or even just binge watch your favorite show. The ideas are bound to come! Knowing how to find a balance between free time and work is a life and mental health saver!
