Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Vanessa Moon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Vanessa, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
For me, I have almost never been in a room of like-minded, or with a group of the same demographic. I have always been the only Person of color in the room, give. I was in advanced placement classes in grade school, having grown up in Delaware. I was always someone’s “first-time.” The first person of Caribbean descent that someone’s ever met. The only one with my natural hair out, the only black female Opera Singer in the class. At some point, you have a realization that you are never going to “fit in” unless you change and that no amount of changing can alter who you really are, and then you discover purpose. Once I realized I was supposed to be in certain rooms because my mere prescience changed outdated narratives, my voice and opinions got louder. Acceptance no longer mattered to me, only representation, and tonality. It became a nice feeling also knowing I was breaking stereotypes and outdated programming. A lot of my success has been rooted in changing the view of being seen as the oddball to undiscovered excellence, whether that’s welcomed or not.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Vanessa Moon and I am currently a singer & songwriter specializing in the Rhythm & Blues, Soul, and House music genres. I am also an Influencer in the New Age Community, with my other special talent as a Psychic Intuitive Spiritual Advisor. I read music and the stars. That being said, my goal throughout life hasn’t changed, I am a child of the Cosmos and my purpose is to inspire, create, cultivate, and express love in all forms via my art. I am currently releasing my first single in years, entitled “Calling Me In.” This is very exciting for me as I believe this track nicely infuses both the Musical world and New Age Community that I am apart of and challenges everyone to look a bit deeper into the way we see romantic, emotional connections. I believe, I was put on Earth to open up minds, and expand perspectives, all while entertaining, and fostering happiness in the process. I have a successful social media presence, giving regular free for advice about life on YouTube, Tik Tok, etc., as Vanessa Moon Tarot, and I vend and do fortune telling at various music festivals, and spiritual community events up and down the East Coast. I also, am an active performer currently based out of Atlanta, Georgia. I have a few events approaching where I’ll be performing, besides at Apache XL, I’ll be at the Conscious Cypher from October 5th-6th. More information about me and what’s to come is on my website https://vanessamoonzone.com.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
When I look back at my journey one of the biggest lessons that has helped me become successful is to work on my confidence. I was always confident in my talent and my ability to entertain, however, that is not always what set me apart from the rest. The quote “comparison is the thief of joy,” couldn’t be a more true statement. The faster one learns to stop comparing themself to the competition and to pour into oneself more joy and love of the craft, and to do it knowing they are one of a kind, confidently – the easier the opportunities flow in. Another lesson I’ve learned is to be quiet. Work in silence because when you are impactful and extremely creative, you are heavily watched, and it’s not always the best idea to share your masterpiece with everyone right away or your thoughts. Learn to sit in a room and absorb what’s happening and not give away your brilliance until you have surveyed the room to know exactly who and what is for you. Lastly, it’s very important to work smarter and not harder. One will naturally work hard at something they love and are passionate about, therefore, it’s best not to overthink everything, instead, be inspired and take your time. Things happen in your season, regardless, and somehow the journey always makes sense when you start to see the fruits of your labor. However, you can’t enjoy any of it if you are burnt out and overworked, and that often leads to more mistakes.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
This is a funny question to me now because my younger self couldn’t appreciate this at all, and I would have had a completely different perspective in the past, nearly opposite. Although, due to my growth and the inner work that I’ve done on myself, I couldn’t be more grateful for these gems. My parents didn’t spare my feelings about any scrutiny they had of me, my talent, my body, my mind, and my potential. At times, I thought it was harsh, and I definitely needed therapy. However, the immense and deep compassion I have for their honesty is probably the only reason I have never given up. My mother was strict about me being excellent when it came to my educational goals and my musicality. My father was vehement about me having fun and being diverse and versatile, but also about pushing myself to be healthy and look the part I want to be. I pushed back on that the most, I had self-esteem issues and didn’t feel my looks should have anything to do with my craft, but I do see how he was correct. When it relates to your confidence, it absolutely becomes a personal journey and isn’t about other’s opinions, it’s about you making art with your body as well and displaying yourself from the inside out. This was a hard concept for me to grasp because his delivery and my mother’s, on the topic, wasn’t always kind. However, they were correct, self perception of my flaws were interrupting my creative potential, and I wasn’t flowering at one point. Their blunt language has also saved me because the world is not kind and I have been more than prepared because they never shielded me from criticism. They also rewarded my achievements and always made me plan for what was next. I am lucky to have had parents who were individually talented and excellent in their own right as my mother was a talented scholar, corporate accountant, and community organizer. Whereas my father was a career Dancehall and Carpenter. They were also immigrants and I am a first generation American, so with that comes the expectation of challenge and the will to overcome.
