Meet Vanessa & Victoria

We were lucky to catch up with Vanessa & Victoria recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Vanessa & Victoria , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
We are proud to say that we get our work ethic from our amazing mother, and grandmother. They are Cuban immigrants, and came to this country in 1984. They have a spirit of resiliency and determination and we would not be where we are today without their support and encouragement.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hello! We are Dulceria Candle Supply. We are proud to say we are twin sisters (identical) moms, and wives. We handle everything in our company from customer service, to shipping, packaging, and even creating the products that we offer that are custom made.

We come from a long line of entrepreneurs, as our grandmother ran her own interior design business for over 30 years, and our mother ran two successful companies as well. We worked together as lab medical assistants at our local trauma hospital for 12 years, and although we loved and appreciated our time there, we always knew we were destined for something bigger and more fulfilling in our lives.

We began making candles right around when the pandemic hit, and we truly fell in love with the craft. Long story short, one day we made custom lids for our candles and the rest is history. We never thought in a million years that something so small would lead us to where we are today. But we are always incredibly grateful that life has brought us on this path.

We now run a full, candle supply company. From custom lids, to vessels, to wax, to oils, wicks and more. We are your one stop shop for all things candle making!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Candle making. I think this one is pretty obvious, but we felt that because we had prior knowledge and skill in regards to candle making, it helps us resonate more and be of better assistance to our customers. 2. Attentiveness. Customers want to know that you care about them, and that you are there for them every step of the way. Even if that means answering emails at midnight; the extra effort never goes unnoticed.
3. Work ethic. A major condition to owning your own business is putting your blood, sweat and tears into your company. No one is going to work as hard as you will. It is going to mean long hours, sometimes weeks without a day off.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I wish I had an answer for this! Being overwhelmed is a major emotion that we experience being a small business owner. Hopefully that will get better one day 🙂
