We recently connected with Vanetta Wallace and have shared our conversation below.
Vanetta, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Being the only person in the room that looks like me used to make me feel uncomfortable. What are they thinking? Will they like me? How do I approach this? It’s simple, I just act the way I’ve always acted. I look past our differences and blend in. I smile, make an introduction, and ask questions to see what we have in common because you can always find a commonality. And if you don’t, you speak to your differences with a positive spin. I am shy by nature, but when asked what my passion is or what makes me tick, I become alive, confident, expressive, and enthusiastically engaged.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a Family Childcare Provider. I have a daycare in my home in which I educate and help coach children from birth to age 5 through their developmental stages. That is my full-time job. However, my side gig involves self-care. I’m a big advocate for taking care of oneself so that you can be readily available to help others. You cannot pour from an empty cup.
Wallace Unlimited is the name of my business. This name came about because with God on my side, there is no limit to what I can do. The daycare falls under the umbrella of Wallace Unlimited, but I also have a few side gigs such as singing for weddings and funerals, and working in the direct selling beauty industry with Color Street.
Color Street is a beauty brand unlike any you’ve ever tried. We offer 100% nail polish in a dry strip form. We also offer make-up products that are vegan and cruelty free. I love the fact that these products are actually good for your skin and help you feel good about yourself. I spend a lot of time doing vendor events, educating women on the importance of not only taking care of themselves, but using products that do the same. Lipsticks that nourish and moisturize, beauty products and an awesome make up remover balm that self corrects skin conditions while removing your make up… things of this nature. Don’t put anything on your skin that’s going to do more harm than goodby covering up your imperfections.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that I feel were most impactful in my journey are listening, assessing, and patience! It’s important to listen to your customers, assess what they’re saying about their needs, and be patient because nothing happens overnight. Everything takes time, and no one is perfect, so when you don’t get the results you want right away in your business, just make a mental note of where you are and reassess in a month’s time, six months’ time, in a year, and watch how you’ve improved. If you’ve seen no improvement, then maybe try a new approach; see the improvement, but always give it time. That’s where most people fail – lack of patience.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I can honestly say God, and my husband have been most helpful and helping me overcome challenges. I go to God first, then bounce things off my husband, and we talk about it and pray.
As far as building and developing essential skills, qualities or knowledge, I have turned to our company resources and other stylists (Color Street consultants). I’m also taken some of the information and nuggets that I’ve learned working in other direct selling companies in the past.. I do read books for professional development every now and then. But most of the information has come through information from leaders in the Color Street business. I take a little bit of what I’ve learned from them and put my own spin on it. Because you have to please your own audience.
