Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Vanity Alexander. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Vanity, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I love this question! Knowing that God created every living being very intentionally, I am fully aware that no two people are exactly alike. This empowers me to humbly exude confidence as I am aware that I am truly unique. Furthermore, I am not ashamed to be black, I take tremendous pride in it. I do not feel inferior nor superior to men, rather I am delighted to be a woman. I do not take credit for the creativity, talents, abilities, and gifts that I possess, instead I give credit where credit is due, and I publicly express my gratitude to God for entrusting me with so much, and thanking him for all that he continues to do. By making it a point to always lead with love, being kind to others, and being myself unapologetically, not only sets me a part, I have found that people organically gravitate towards me in any environment that I am in. As the old adage goes, to whom much is given much is required, so I am committed to showing up as the best version of myself which also translates to being adept in my field as it pertains to business.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Vanity Alexander is a black-owned and operated lifestyle brand that consists of two sectors: women’s ready-to-wear and home decor that doubles as beauty products. Our mission is to bridge the gap between the everyday retail shopper who desires high-end products that may be out of reach and traditional luxury brands. We plan to achieve this be creating attainable products that have been uniquely designed with premium fabrics and ingredients. We’re excited to announce that our new home decor and beauty product line will be available this summer!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
To my fellow entrepreneurs or anyone working towards a particular goal, if that business idea or goal keeps you up at night, take it as sign that you have to pursue it. You were entrusted with that idea for a reason, don’t allow yourself, anyone else, or your current circumstances to talk you out of it, be bold and pursue it with courage! Do not fear failure, the truth is it will likely present itself at some point. Instead, have faith over fear, and trust that your pursuits will inevitably come to pass as long as you remain steadfast, and remember that failures are really learning opportunities, and not a reflection of your abilities. Have fun, enjoy your journey, embrace everything that comes with it, surround yourself with like-minded people, and most importantly remember your “why”, especially when difficult season arise.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Whenever I feel overwhelmed, anxious, or fearful, I immediately pray. My relationship with my Heavenly father comforts me in unimaginable ways, and the peace he provides surpasses all understanding. I also ask for his guidance in those moments, and the weight that I was feeling begins to feel lighter because I don’t have to find a solution on my own. I’ve learned to depend on him more, and less on my own strength. Additionally, slowing down, breathing, redirecting your thoughts to something positive, or doing something that brings you joy are helpful too!
