We recently connected with Varnessa Mechelle Beavers and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Varnessa Mechelle, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I wouldn’t say I found my purpose; rather, my purpose found me. I say this because I have so many passions and interests—things I’ve loved doing for so long—that I’ve had the opportunity to perfect those skills, shaping me into the person I am today.
My purpose began revealing itself to me as a child. I spent countless hours watching cooking shows like Julia Child, Simply Ming, Barefoot Contessa, Jacques Pépin, and many more. I learned about different cuisines and the techniques of cooking, which sparked my desire to experiment with dishes beyond what my father was preparing at home.
Fast forward to November 2017: after years of sharing videos of my homemade dishes in my social media stories, I decided to create a dedicated food page, which has since evolved into my current business, Big Baby’s Magic. The name pays homage to my father, who used to call me “Big Baby,” and I added “Magic” to represent the magic I bring to food.
Today, I’ve expanded my offerings to include mobile bartending, custom desserts, and an extensive catering menu.
Beyond my love for cooking, I have a deep passion for helping others, particularly those struggling with mental health challenges, homelessness, domestic violence, and more. I have always been a dedicated advocate for mental health awareness and supporting vulnerable communities. I am currently pursuing higher education to achieve my long-term goal of becoming a therapist, where I can continue to make a meaningful impact in these areas.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Varnessa Mechelle Beavers, but everyone calls me Mechelle! I am 28 years old, born and raised in Washington, DC. My father, the late Joel J. Beavers Sr., raised me and my little sister Joy all by himself, and he did everything in his power to make sure we were taken care of.
Since my father had my sister and me later in life, his declining health became a pivotal part of our journey. Our goal was to care for him the best we could until his peaceful passing in October 2023. I share this because it is an important part of my story. Life hasn’t been easy, but I still feel truly blessed. Moving into this new chapter of my life without him is bittersweet, but opportunities like this remind me that his presence is still with me.
I am a content creator and have a YouTube channel called Varnessa Mechelle, where I share lifestyle vlogs, behind-the-scenes moments from my catering business, Big Baby’s Magic, and makeup videos. Creating content allows me to express my creativity and tap into my Pisces rising energy.
When I’m not creating content or cooking for my family, I enjoy watching movies, singing karaoke, and spending time in nature. My sisters and I have also started a nonprofit organization, The Beavers and Simmons Foundation, to honor our late parents. Through the foundation, we advocate for mental health awareness and support the homeless community by planning events and outreach programs.
I’m truly excited for this new chapter in my life and look forward to the journey ahead.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three most important qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are learning when to pivot, the ability to work under pressure, and perseverance. Each of these has helped me navigate challenges, embrace opportunities, and grow into the person I am today.
Learning When to Pivot
Life doesn’t always go as planned, and being able to recognize when it’s time to change direction has been crucial. Whether it’s in business, personal growth, or pursuing new opportunities, learning to pivot has kept me adaptable and open to new possibilities.
Advice: Be willing to let go of what isn’t working. Pay attention to what feels aligned and what doesn’t. Trust your instincts, but also rely on reflection—sometimes the greatest growth comes from changing your approach, not your goals.
The Ability to Work Under Pressure
Whether I’m balancing the demands of my catering business, creating content, or managing life’s unexpected challenges, staying calm and focused under pressure has been a game-changer. It’s taught me how to push through tough situations and still produce quality results.
Advice: Develop this skill by practicing time management and breaking big tasks into smaller, manageable steps. Prioritize staying calm through mindfulness techniques like deep breathing or grounding exercises. Pressure often reveals our strengths, so embrace it as an opportunity to grow.
Perseverance
Perseverance is about showing up, even when things get hard. There were moments when giving up felt easier, but staying committed to my goals and vision—even during setbacks—allowed me to keep moving forward.
Advice: Cultivate perseverance by remembering your “why.” Set long-term goals, but celebrate small victories along the way. Surround yourself with people who inspire you and hold you accountable, and remind yourself that success is often the result of consistency over time.
For those early in their journey, my advice is this: stay adaptable, stay focused, and stay resilient. Life will test you, but learning when to pivot, embracing pressure, and persevering through challenges will help you build the foundation for success. Trust the process and believe in yourself—you’ll be amazed at how far you can go.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes, I am always open to partnering and collaborating with like-minded individuals and organizations! I’m especially interested in working with those who are passionate about food, content creation, mental health advocacy, and community support.
Culinary and Event Collaborations
I’m looking to connect with fellow chefs, bakers, mobile bartenders, event planners, and anyone passionate about food and hospitality. Whether it’s collaborating on events, pop-up kitchens, or special projects, I love opportunities to showcase creativity and bring people together through food.
Content Creators and Brands
I would love to partner with other content creators, small businesses, and brands—especially those in the food, lifestyle, wellness, or beauty space. Collaboration ideas can include joint projects, content creation (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok), or creative campaigns that inspire and add value to our audiences.
Mental Health and Community Advocates
I’m deeply passionate about supporting mental health awareness, homelessness, and survivors of domestic violence. I’m eager to partner with individuals, nonprofits, or organizations who share this vision to amplify important causes, plan events, and make a meaningful impact in our communities.
