Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Vaughan Weiss. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Vaughan, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.
The best way to ensure you don’t experience burn out is to create a balanced life. I know it sounds very easy but it’s important to strike a balance between work and rest. I personally decided that I’ll work hard 6 days in the week and make sure I take off Sunday. Which is usually where I prioritize my family and dog. Drinking a lot of water and eating healthily strengthens the body, which really goes a long way when your mind and body is pushed to its limits. The key is to listen to your body, it can start with shoulder or back pains. In that case I usually go for massages to relieve some of the tension.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I have a background in mechanical engineering, graduating with a National diploma at the Namibian university of science and technology in 2020. I’ve worked in my company called Wision Media and Drafting as head 3d modeler and animator since 2019. Leveraging of my technical and creative skills to create illustrations and 3d visuals that accurately communicate products and architectural developments. I work on projects like product animations, residential house designs and big hydrogen projects done by international energy companies. I’ve taken part in a logo design competition and won, architectural modern hut design competition and also futuristic town development competition. Received training on how to run a creative business, videography with the one minute academy and more. Winning startup competitions like CEP 2021 by Goethe institute Namibia, the boost up competition Namibia 2022 and last year NIPDB Techovation Social competition for companies and individuals in the creative and culture industry. In 2022 joined forces with a startup called TL entertainment to provide tutorials in game design and development to kids. Helping them develop skills in graphic design, 3d modeling, coding and design thinking. This birthed a new startup called Edu-Game Namibia, Which managed to gain support and endorsement from MTC and NUST. Helping us scale up from 7 students to easily 35 up to date.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most important skill I’ve acquired and probably the most valuable is people’s skill. Being able to walk into any room and create lasting relationships with people. Even when you’re scared you might sound stupid or say the wrong thing. Because your network can really accelerate your success in business. The second is being brave or adventurous. You always hear people say one I’ll do this, or I’ll do that, but that one fine day never comes. That where a lot of peoples dreams or ambitions die. My biggest successes or opportunities came from being bold enough to challenge myself t0 try, even if I didn’t qualify. Just shooting my shot, whether it’s a miss or hit. Lastly, this is a point of knowledge. Always seek discomfort, cause no growth takes place in your comfort zone. Like a good example is whenever I go to events with friends or business partners, I never stay with them. In that moment they are my comfort zone, because they are safe, and I don’t have to break my head trying to have a conversation. So, what happens is I create opportunity to meet new people, that I never would have met.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My greatest support has come from the entrepreneurial community. Every startup incubator, training program, fellow entrepreneur and NGO I have engaged with has uplifted me in a personal and professional capacity. Being part of a community locally and internationally offers you the opportunity to share experiences and meet people you can relate with.
