Meet Vicki Lovelee

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Vicki Lovelee. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Vicki below.

Vicki, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

Performing and making music has definitely built my confidence in both my personal life and artistry. I remember back when I was in university, me and a few friends were just jamming in a small practice room. I’d be so nervous to even sing out loud in front of my friends. Fast forward to now – I’ve rehearsed and performed on stage as much as I could. And my confidence in myself grows every time. Music and making art has allowed me to express myself and as a result, I found myself and my identity in doing so.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Hey everyone! My name is Vicki Lovelee and I’m a a Chinese Canadian alt-pop artist and songwriter, based in Markham, Ontario. I’m a classically trained pianist with a jazz vocal degree. And with my music knowledge and love for pop music, I end up creating a unique blend of pop with dark drama and orchestral sounds.

I’d describe my overall persona as fierce yet vulnerable. And am inspired by Lady Gaga, Halsey, Melanie Martinez, MARINA, Mitski, Freddie Mercury and Phantom of the Opera. I write about self-growth, acceptance, mental health, religion, and heartbreak.

I’m a huge advocate for mental health awareness and believe in the acceptance of all cultures and identities. I create music that helps turn painful experiences into empowering anthems. I’m currently working on a new album that’ll release in the Fall of 2024.

I graduated from York University’s Music Program, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. And also completed Canada’s Music Incubator’s Artist Entrepreneur Program. As an independent artist, I’ve garnered over 100K streams on music platforms and have graced the stages of events like Breaking Sound Canada, Taste of Asia, and York Pride. I’ve been featured on media outlets like Aesthetic Magazine (Toronto, 2023), Canadian Beats (2023) and Lefuturewave (Netherlands, 2022). As well as playlist features such as CBC Radio, and Exclaim!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Persistence, honesty and the willingness to learn from mistakes. These are the 3 qualities that have helped me grow in my journey as a music artist. Like any industry, you’ll face a lot of rejection and scrutiny especially in the music industry. It’s okay to be sad about it but keep going. Stay persistent and keep creating and learning from your mistakes. That’s the only way to grow. I’m a huge believer in being honest even if it’s difficult in doing so. Especially when working with other creatives. It’s ok if you don’t like something, but be polite and honest about it. Staying honest will create trust between you and your collaborators, and therefore will help make a better song!

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?

I’ve been rehearsing and upgrading my live shows this past year! I started working with a choreographer because I’ve included a backup dancer in my shows. I usually perform solo and already incorporate some flowy dance movements. But this year, having a backup dancer with me really levelled up my shows.
