Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Victor Ismail. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Victor, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
From a mathematical equation. In my opinion, in some parts, life is like a mathematical equation.
So, let’s say we have a mathematical equation, if we want something positive on the other side of the equal sign, we have to add more positive numbers, no matter how big the negative is on the other side, as long as we keep adding positive numbers, it will slowly become positive too.
No matter how big the hardship is, as long as we make progress, I believe happiness will come eventually, and I thank God for this.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
The foundation of my journey as a graphic designer cannot be separated from my childhood. Since kindergarten, I really like drawing or the world of art, I used to spend hours just to do it. Whether it’s cartoon characters from my childhood.
I was first exposed to the world of design in my late teens, at that time there was a friend of mine who really liked drawing logos from famous brands. “What is this?” this was new to me, slowly I found it very fascinating and I continued to explore it.
Until in my mid-20s I collaborated with one of my friends to pursue this field professionally. We have worked on many logo designs for various fields from FNB, politicians, artists, property, you name it.
At the beginning of this year I decided to start my own journey in this field, I started SailCup Design from scratch. From my various experiences, in my opinion a good logo technically must meet 3 criteria. But why technically? Because we will be able to measure it objectively. Many people can say I like this logo, I don’t like this logo. But the point of view is subjective, which means it is difficult to measure.
The 3 criteria are simple, unique and appropriate. Regardless of whether it has dual meaning features, hidden messages, etc. or not
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
If asked to choose this will be very difficult because all three are very crucial in influencing the output. Maybe we all know the impact of quality and skill but without broad and deep knowledge it will be impossible. As much as possible we must be one shoe in terms of understanding the client’s problems, and delivering the right logo for the problem and situation, this requires broad knowledge.
That is also my advice to anyone who is in the early stages of their journey in this field. Always increase your knowledge, and do not force a logo with the features we discussed earlier, if it is not possible to be simple, unique and appropriate. Moreover, a logo that is too busy, avoid this.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Take a moment, gather your strength and take a few steps back if necessary to see the big picture. And do whatever positive thing we can, even if sometimes there is no direct connection, because we will not know where life will take us.
Keep your mind positive and keep strive forward.
