We recently connected with Victor Loo and have shared our conversation below.
Victor, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience is deeply rooted in my experiences as an immigrant growing up in poverty. Coming from a background where resources were scarce, I learned to navigate challenges with resilience and perseverance. Additionally, being discriminated against as an Asian individual, compounded by societal expectations surrounding my smaller, more feminine frame, presented further obstacles to overcome. Moreover, being non-binary within the LGBTQIA+ community added another layer of complexity to my journey. Despite facing numerous barriers and adversity, I have developed inner strength through unwavering determination and tireless effort. These experiences have shaped me into the resilient individual I am today, capable of confronting and surmounting obstacles with courage.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a dedicated advocate for equity and justice, serving as a principal consultant, executive coach, and strategist. My leadership is particularly noted in reducing health disparities and centering with equity; my significant roles including work with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration – Health Resources and Services Administration (SAMHSA-HRSA) Center for Integrated Health Solutions’ Addressing Health Disparities Leadership Program, and the National Council for Mental Wellbeing’s Healthy Youth Leadership Institute. I am a distinguished representative for the United States Department of Health & Human Services’ Region 10 – Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, playing a pivotal role on the Achieving Behavioral Health Equity Steering Committee.
My commitment extends across multiple sectors, including serving on the Washington State Commit to Change Steering Committee, acting as an Equity Ambassador for the Nonprofit Association of Washington in Seattle, King County, and contributing to the Homeless Service Providers Study Advisory Committee alongside Uncommon Bridges, Washington State Department of Commerce, and D-FINE Concepts. I also work with elected officials from the King County Council, Seattle City Council, and Sound Cities Association on the King County Board of Health, the Washington State Governor’s Washington State Office of Equity’s Community Advisory Board, Friends of Waterfront Community Connections Committee, Washington State Department of Health’s (DOH) Community Advisory Committee and DOH’s Washington Syndemic Planning Group and its Steering Committee.
With a deep commitment to serving Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI), as well as immigrants, refugees, and the housing instability/homeless/unhoused/unsheltered, I am also a vigorous advocate for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, previously co-chairing the City of Seattle LGBTQ Commission.
In addition to my advocacy and leadership roles, I explore the intersection of fashion and social justice as a non-binary/androgynous model. Through my work in fashion, I aim to blend my commitment to integrated managed care—encompassing primary care, behavioral health, and social determinants of health—with a broader message of inclusion and equity.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities that have been most impactful are discipline, understanding that kindness may not always be reciprocated, and prioritizing self-care.
Discipline: Consistent discipline has been crucial in overcoming obstacles and achieving my goals. Staying focused, setting clear objectives, and adhering to a structured plan have helped me navigate challenges and stay on track. Cultivate discipline by establishing routines, setting achievable goals, and holding oneself accountable. Start small, gradually increasing the level of discipline over time, and celebrate each accomplishment along the way.
Understanding that kindness may not beget kindness: While kindness is a virtue, it is essential to recognize that not everyone may reciprocate it. In my journey, I have learned to offer kindness without expecting anything in return, understanding that people have their own struggles and limitations. My advice for those beginning their journey is to continue being kind and compassionate, but also to set boundaries and protect their well-being. It is important to prioritize relationships with those who reciprocate kindness and support, while also recognizing when it is necessary to distance oneself from toxic or unhealthy dynamics.
Self-care: Prioritizing self-care has been fundamental in maintaining my physical, mental, and emotional well-being throughout my journey. Taking time to rest, recharge, and engage in activities that #SparkJoy.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I prioritize spending time alone to recenter and regain clarity. I also find solace in the company of close friends and family, as their support helps me navigate challenging times. Additionally, I practice gratitude and mindfulness, focusing on the present moment and acknowledging the blessings in my life. Engaging in regular exercise and maintaining a healthy diet are vital for nurturing my body, mind, and spirit. These practices help me manage stress and maintain balance in my life.
