Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Victor Nixon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Victor, so happy to have you on the platform with us today and excited to chat about your lessons and insights. Our ability to make good decisions can massively impact our lives, careers and relationships and so it would be very helpful to hear about how you built your decision-making skills.
Developing strong decision-making skills was a process that unfolded over time: through trial, learning, and surrounding myself with the right people. Early in my career, I was focused purely on the technical side of HVAC and plumbing. Once I stepped into leadership, I realized that my decisions now impacted not just the quality of the work, but the direction of the company, the well-being of my team, and the satisfaction of our customers.
I had to train myself to think holistically by balancing short-term needs with long-term vision. I started asking better questions, seeking divers perspectives, and tracking outcomes so I could learn from both successes and setbacks. I also invested time into understanding business fundamentals like finance, operations, and marketing, because good decisions often require you to zoom out and look at the full picture.
At the end of the day, I believe strong decision-making comes from clarity of values. For me, that’s integrity, quality, and service. When those are at the core, it becomes easier to choose the right path, even when it’s not the easiest one.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
At Heat Busters Inc., we offer well-tailored HVAC and plumbing solutions throughout San Diego County. But what really sets us apart is how we do the work. We don’t rely on generic solutions or inflated quotes. Instead, we go on-site, evaluate each home or property individually, and craft a cost-effective solution that fits the specific need. That might mean reworking a duct system instead of recommending a pricey equipment upgrade. Our goal is always to do what’s right for the customer and the property, not what’s most profitable.
What excites me the most is that we’re not just solving problems, we’re creating comfort. There’s something deeply rewarding about helping families live more comfortably in their homes, especially when they feel heard and respected in the process.
Right now, we’re expanding our 360° Comprehensive HVAC & Water Heater Care Plan, growing our service area, and continuing to build relationships with top equipment suppliers to offer even more flexible options for our clients. We’re also strengthening our internal training efforts so our team stays ahead of the curve as technology in our industry evolves. If there’s one thing I want readers to know – it’s that Heat Busters isn’t just a service provider; we’re a partner in long-term home comfort and energy efficiency.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three Most Important Qualities, Skills, or Areas of Knowledge:
i) Leadership with Accountability – Leading a team means owning the results, whether good or bad, and setting the tone for the culture you want to build.
ii) Customer-Centered Communication – The ability to listen, educate, and build trust with clients is what turns one-time jobs into lasting relationships.
iii) Technical Versatility & Adaptability – Staying relevant means continuing to learn and adapt to new technology and methods in our field.
Looking back, the three qualities that have had the most impact on my journey are:
i) Initiative – I didn’t wait to be “ready.” I stepped into unfamiliar territory and figured things out along the way. For others starting out, my advice is: act before you feel fully prepared. Growth happens in Motion.
ii) Discipline & Consistency – It’s not about doing something perfectly once, it’s about doing the right things repeatedly, even when no one is Watching.
iii) Openness to Learning – I had to learn finance, marketing, business management – areas that weren’t natural to me. The moment you stop learning, you stop growing. For anyone early in their journey: stay curious, seek out mentors, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. You don’t need to have all the answers, but you do need to be committed to learning them
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I believe in starting from your strengths, but not stopping there. Your strengths are your launchpad, but to lead a business or build a sustainable career, you have to develop a broader base. When I started Heat Busters, I was confident in my trade skills – that was my strength. But I quickly learned that running a successful business required understanding everything from cash flow to branding. If I had ignored those areas, I would’ve stayed stuck.
That said, I didn’t try to become an expert in everything. Instead, I educated myself enough to make smart decisions and then built a team of people who complemented my skills. So my philosophy is: lean into your strengths to stand out, and stretch into new areas to stay in the game. That combination is what creates long- term resilience
