Meet Victor Teran

We were lucky to catch up with Victor Teran recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Victor, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
Self-care comes in many ways. Some do yoga, CrossFit, and others run. Physical activity is one of the most important things we can do for our physical and mental health. What has helped me become more effective at work has been weightlifting, martial arts and cardio. What we do is a lifestyle, and once we understand the benefits, it becomes clear as to why we continue to do it!

Physical activity improves our mental health, reduces risks of heart disease, strengthen our bones and muscle, manage our weight, regulates high blood pressure, that’s just to name a few. Exercising not only boosts our energy, but improves our mood, and promotes better sleep.

If you are suffering from or want to prevent a stroke, high blood pressure, anxiety, and depression then start exercising. We don’t need to do high intensity training to get these benefits, a 30 minute walk will do just fine; but we need to get up and do something!

If you’re feeling anxiety, lack of sleep, or depressed; by all means take a little walk or try something new like yoga and martial arts. By keeping your body moving, it will release endorphins which are the “feel good’ hormones your body needs to improve your mood!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Victor Teran, I am an 8th degree master instructor at International Taekwon-Do Academy in Arvada, Colorado. Our training center started in New Jersey in 2013, and have been in business for 9+ years. We are dedicated to every student to ensure they receive the proper training they deserve.

We love representing our hometown of Arvada, and we look forward to continuing our success for our town. We compete 10 to 11 times a year, so there is definitely no shortages on events.

2023 will be the year where our training center will host 2 championship events in Colorado. We are excited to introduce continuous team sparring and individual Olympic sparring to our neighboring martial arts schools.

The Spartan Cup and the All-American Martial Arts Championship will be an open competition where athletes 4+ years old can compete in the following events: Traditional, creative, open pattern. Weapons. Point sparring, individual and team Olympic sparring.

Our focus for our events is to assist each other become better at our craft; in order to perform and become a world-class competitor. My focus has always been about quality of training rather than quantity, and that is something we plan to do at our events.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities of many I feel are important and has shaped my life are dependability, integrity, and self-improvement.

My advise to the younger generation business owners, young instructors and/or athletes is that no matter how hard things get, or the obstacles you encounter; continue to push forward. Believe in yourself and your cause, and you will achieve your goal(s)!

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
We all go through hardship in our lives, and we must understand that no-one is perfect. Does not matter how much of the straight line you walk, sooner or later you veer a little. But, we are strong enough to continue our path to better ourselves. No matter who much you want to do for your family and/or friends, you cannot do anything for them if you do not take care of yourself first.

My biggest growth has been understanding myself as a person. Acknowledging my past while in service for my country. Although, I love to work and stay busy; I have also learned to set time for family!
