We recently connected with Victoria Kay and have shared our conversation below.
Victoria , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Confidence was always something I struggled with growing up. I saw it as a trait that I simply didn’t possess. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized confidence is not a trait but rather a skill, and skills can be worked on and developed over time. So I started listening to affirmations daily, meditating whenever I could find the time, and changed how I talked to myself. I can be a vicious and harsh self critic. But I made it a rule that I cannot talk badly about myself whether that be out loud or in my head. I stopped partaking in self deprecating jokes or making snide remarks about myself. In the beginning it was challenging, anytime I began to beat myself up or talk badly about myself I would often have to catch myself mid sentence and actively choose self compassion. I would go on “gratitude walks” around my neighborhood. During these walks I would just list off things that I was grateful for, it’s very grounding and puts me in a positive headspace. Over time I noticed that things I used to be self conscious about didn’t bother me as much, which boosted my self esteem. There are still times where I feel down but I now have the tools and the skill set to pick myself back up.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a model and an actor. Being in these industries is rough and it’s very competitive. I decided back in 2021 that I wanted to pursue modeling and acting full time. Since then I have been putting myself out there trying to expand my skills. I actively submit myself to agencies seeking representation, as of now I still haven’t found an agent. But, I do not let that discourage me, I will continue to be a freelancer for however long it takes. This past year I feel like I’ve come to a turning point of sorts because I am picking up more jobs than I ever had before. Recently, I became a brand ambassador for a New York based lingerie brand called Thistle and Spire and I got to be a background actor for this new show called The Madison, which should be coming out in 2025.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The absolute most important skill someone needs in order to be successful, especially in highly competitive fields is resilience. You need to be resilient in order to push past all the rejection, setbacks, and obstacles you will face.
Be kind to yourself. Like I said earlier, I am my own worst critic, but being harsh to yourself doesn’t help you. It only makes you frustrated and it reinforces negative beliefs about yourself. You will eventually make mistakes or do something wrong, when that happens show yourself some grace. Use those moments as learning opportunities and see them not as failures but as growing pains.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always eager to connect with fellow models and actors as well as photographers. I enjoy meeting people who share the same interests and passions as I do. I love it when I can tell that they take their work seriously.
Like I said earlier, I am looking for representation with an agency so I would also love to connect with an agent who sees my potential.
