We recently connected with Viking Joe and have shared our conversation below.
Viking Joe, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep it alive by continuing to nurture it. Creativity is like a fire, it can start with just a spark.
I think everyone is born with creativity, the hard part is keeping it going, adding fuel to the fire, and keeping the world from snuffing it out.
I’m constantly on the look out for new ideas to try out, new styles, new directions, new anything. You never know where it’s going to be coming from, you just have to keep an eye out for it. Sometimes it’s from foreign films, sometimes its an artist across the world doing things I would’ve never considered, and sometimes it’s the ones from right down the road. I’ll study techniques and try to figure out how they did what they did and apply it to my art, twisting it to make it mine and do what they do my way.
I take inspiration from everywhere I can find it. The more fuel you can add, the larger your fire can become.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I own and operate a small studio in Cushing, OK. called Skull Creek Tattoo. Our goal is to help individuals tell their story through the art of expression via tattoos. Every tattoo tells a story, let us help you tell yours!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Understanding that you aren’t just putting a picture on a body part, you are putting art on someone who trusts you to alter their body for the rest of their life. It should not be taken lightly.
2. Fostering your artistic abilities, you might be good at art, but you should always strive to be greater.
3. Never stop learning, never stop growing, never stop evolving. The day you think you know everything is the day you lose it all.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
There are a few people I have to thank for that, I owe my work ethic to my parents and my skills and knowledge to several people all around the globe.
