We recently connected with Vikita Poindexter and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Vikita, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
In the face of tremendous adversity, one is presented with a pivotal choice: to be broken by it or to rise above. I have steadfastly chosen the latter. While I’ve certainly felt the temptation to succumb to despair and quit, I made a conscious decision not to. From a young age, I encountered trials that no child should ever endure, particularly at the hands of beloved and respected family members. These experiences challenged my very identity and sense of self-worth, and their echoes lingered into adulthood.
The passing of my mother, especially during my first pregnancy as an only child, was a devastating blow. Coping with her loss was excruciating, compounded by familial drama that ensued. My faith wavered, and I questioned the purpose of my existence on this earth. Moreover, the birth of my second child, whom doctors didn’t expect to survive past the age of 10, would have shattered most individuals. However, for me, it became a driving force to persevere. Having conquered some of life’s toughest challenges, I refused to let this one defeat me.
My personal philosophy has always been rooted in the understanding that everyone faces hardships. It’s not the adversity itself that defines us, but rather how we choose to confront it. We can either approach life’s trials with constant complaints and bitterness, or we can navigate them with grace and humility. I have consistently opted for the latter.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Most importantly I am a proud mother of 2 and the Gigi (grandma) to my first grandbaby girl. I am the CEO/President of Poindexter Consulting Group, LLC, a minority woman-owned small business. I educates my fellow business owners on how to propel and grow their business in the U.S. with an emphasis in California on human resources, diversity in staffing, and recruitment. I am an appointed executive council member of AARP-CA, board member of California’s statewide Micro Enterprise network (CAMEO), Board Member, GRID Inland Empire, Board member for the National Black Entrepreneurs Project, Public Member, The State Bar of California Committee on Professional Responsibility and Conduct, member of the California Small Business Association on the Labor and Employment Issues Committee, Workforce Skills Committee, Education Committee, Workers Compensation Committee,. I am the former Board President of the California Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners. I believe it is important to sit at tables where the voiceless have a voice. In order to make a difference, you have to have a seat at the table. If not, you’re on the menu.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Faith is the cornerstone of my life, my guiding principle. It’s not just a belief system; it’s the very essence of how I navigate the world. I walk with confidence, trusting that things will unfold according to God’s plan, even when the path ahead is obscured. Throughout my trials and tribulations, faith has been my steadfast companion, empowering me to overcome obstacles that seemed insurmountable.
Moreover, it is by faith that I have achieved everything I have thus far, and I remain driven by the belief that there is much more to accomplish. The mantra “if you believe it, you can achieve it” resonates deeply with me, serving as a constant reminder of the power of positive thinking and unwavering faith.
Negativity has no place in my life. I intentionally distance myself from negative influences, whether they be people or circumstances. I refuse to entertain negativity in any form. Instead, I actively seek out the silver linings amidst life’s chaos, always striving to find the blessings hidden within the turmoil.
Persistence ranks second in my value system. The word “no” holds no power over me; it simply fuels my determination to turn it into a resounding “yes.” Giving up is not an option in my lexicon. However, I do recognize that there are moments when doors close, and rather than lamenting those closures, I embrace them with gratitude. Each closed door signifies either a redirection towards something better suited for me or a realization that it wasn’t meant to be.
Believing in yourself is paramount. If you don’t, it’s unlikely that anyone else will. Every day, I affirm my own capabilities, reminding myself of my strengths and potential. I maintain a daily ritual of self-affirmations, a series of declarations that bolster my confidence and prepare me for whatever challenges lie ahead. This practice reaffirms my identity and reinforces my belief in what I am capable of achieving.
In a world where many voices seek to limit us with their doubts and restrictions, it’s essential to drown out the noise and assert our own convictions. We each have a unique purpose, and embracing that truth is key to fulfilling our destinies. By steadfastly believing in ourselves, we can confidently pursue and accomplish all that we were meant to.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
The importance of self-care is often discussed, but I believe it’s still not given the emphasis it truly deserves. It’s akin to the safety instructions given on airplanes: in case of an emergency, you’re instructed to put your own oxygen mask on first before assisting others. This analogy holds true for our daily lives as well.
As natural givers, we often prioritize the needs of others above our own, neglecting our well-being in the process. However, I’ve come to realize that neglecting self-care ultimately renders us ineffective in supporting others. It’s a fundamental requirement, regardless of how demanding our work or ambitions may be. Taking time to rejuvenate ourselves is not a luxury but a necessity.
It took me years to grasp this concept fully. I used to exhaust myself trying to meet everyone else’s needs while neglecting my own. Now, I understand that prioritizing self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential for maintaining balance and sustainability in both personal and professional endeavors.
