We were lucky to catch up with Vilash Reddy recently and have shared our conversation below.
VILASH, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience is based on learning to overcome adversity which is a hurt issue with all humans. We try to learn from our mistakes and growth as individuals trying to be better version of our lives. In order to be resilience you must endure hardships, because it makes us also empathetic towards all human beings that we can teach through our wisdom which is deep rooted in resilience. Suffering is a unfortunate part of life but it is the choices that we make, to succeed or to persevere. Our world is full of those are suffer that just get through life, but we hear of many heroic feats, because a lot of it is about letting go of excuses and trying each day to challenge yourself to be the best version. Resilience is the complete opposite of insanity, you keep trying to do different things for more positive outcome. You just never give up particularly on yourself and its important to be honest with yourself and give your some grace.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I created One Life Psychiatry from the ground up after I left my last job and it was my one year anniversary and it was a journey. But I wanted to step away from treating people like puppets and just tossing them pills. I wanted to educate them on the struggles that they could overcome with mental illness as I see from 3-80+ years of age with all conditions. I love challenging cases because they come in with no hope and desperation and it feels amazing contributing to their psychological and psychiatric well being. Dealing with mental illl people can be exhausted as many mental health practitioners have tainted the field they lost the human compassion. When I started my company I wanted people to know that Im human and I act like that too. I do not have an ego but my goal is make them feel empowered, educated, and understood. But there are some that don’t want to change which is part of radical acceptance. Change is hard but it is the only way to liberate our minds and hearts. There are many people I admire that have severe mental illness but they show up and try and try and try. That is hope, not knowing the outcome but feeling that you cant give up. My role is to be guide through their journey, wash away all their bad mental health experiences and find the right fitting customized treatment for their needs. Also to know that I genuinely care about the longevity of their well being. They teach me as much as I teach them. I feel honored that I can live through the lens of some waste lives. I always count my blessings and I can say that I try my best and put my heart and soul into what I do. That is why I named my brand One Life Psychiatry, it is time for change, as you only have one life. You cant go backward but need to gain wisdom to make better decision. I tell all patients, particular ones struggling with addiction, there will bumps in the road but that is okay. Setbacks teach us something. Our subconscious is extremely powerful, which is why I practice various therapy and alternative medicine too, tailored for each one of my patients.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Hard work is key to anything but I think that passion to make a quality practice and having quality intentions in my goals and what I wanted. I think mental health is a need not a want which is why I help a lot of under-served patients. I am a huge out of box thinker so I use that to my advantage whether building my website or integrating my clinic setup. One of the biggest journey that I learned is you never know when you will find your biggest passion during the hardest set-backs of your life. Sometimes you gotta “break the puzzle” to reassess the pieces and put it back to where it should seemingly be. Flexibility is key and don’t take things to personal especially with a journey into the unknown. It can be a scary place, having faith in yourself and abilities is always key. My biggest growth was stepping out of comfortable and tailoring my career and life the way I want it to be. Money will come and money will go, but be wise, but fixate like it is the root of happiness which is far from the truth. Being broke can humble you and make you more driven. There is a lesson in all adversity, I am living proof.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
This challenging is something that is truthful. Not everyone is going to like you because we all come in with our subconscious baggage. So learn to avoid to be a people pleaser and be a “me pleaser” which does not mean that you selfish but more self-protective. Our society prays on social media, techology, but we are losing the essence of humanity. I have learned to stand up for myself because I just think that there is a ultimate truth: fairness; Simple treat people the way you want to be treated; rich or poor; because you will realize that as long as your good to yourself it does not matter who stands around you, as people are transient.
