We recently connected with Vince Freeman and have shared our conversation below.
Vince, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
I’ve always been known as a joyful person. Before I was born, a minister prophesied that I would bring laughter into the world, so my parents gave me the middle name Isaac, which means “he will laugh.” Optimism has felt natural ever since.
But joy is different. It’s deeper. It’s not a mood, it’s a decision.
Over the past few years, I’ve faced real pain—miscarriage, loss, betrayal, disappointment. Optimism alone couldn’t carry me through that. Joy did. And for me, that joy is found in Jesus. Hebrews 12:2 says He endured the cross because of the joy set before Him. That changes everything.
What you set your eyes on will determine your joy. If you chase success, status, or stuff, you’ll always feel empty. But if you fix your eyes on the purpose and plan God has for your life, you’ll find real fulfillment, even in the hard seasons.
When my wife and I moved to California in 2014 without a job, home, or car, we had to trust God like never before. Every challenge since—financial, medical, relational—has become an invitation to walk in faith, not fear.
Now, after nearly a decade in full-time ministry, I’ve stepped into the unknown to build something new. Not because it’s easy—but because I believe joy is possible, even here. I’ve learned to say, “Not my will, but Yours.” That’s where my optimism comes from: a deep trust in the One who leads me, even when the road is unclear.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I help people tell better stories.
Through my agency, Damascus Creative, I work with businesses, churches, nonprofits, and purpose-driven brands to craft content that moves people—from messaging to film to full campaigns. I believe stories have the power to change lives when they’re told with clarity and conviction. That’s what drives everything I do.
I’ve seen firsthand how the right story at the right time can spark transformation. I’ve spent over 20 years in ministry, including serving as a creative pastor at a megachurch in San Diego. Now, I bring that heart into every project, blending creative direction with strategy to help leaders connect with their audience and make a lasting impact.
This year, I stepped out to run Damascus full-time. I’m building something intentional and focused by offering workshops, brand storytelling, and content packages that don’t just look good, but actually move people to action.
One thing I’m especially excited about is my StoryBrand Marketing & Messaging Workshop. It’s built to help any business or organization, no matter the industry, cut through the noise and clarify their message. Whether you’re a church, a startup, or a seasoned brand, people won’t engage if they’re confused. This workshop gives you the tools to communicate clearly, connect with your audience, and grow with confidence.
If the story matters, I want to help tell it well—and make sure the right people hear it.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1) Be kind.
People will often choose you over someone else simply because of how you made them feel. Most are doing the best they can with what they know. Give the same grace you’ll one day need.
2) Be faithful.
Half the battle is showing up. Use what you have and do what you can. Don’t chase shortcuts. Build the habits now that will grow the results you want later.
3) Be humble.
Great things take time. Ask for help. Listen well. Learn from others’ wins and mistakes. Step in where you can add value. When you serve others, you’ll never walk away empty.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
If I could only recommend one book right now, it would be Living Fearless by Jamie Winship. A mentor introduced this author to my wife and I and it has had an incredible amount influence on how we are growing this year. The subtitle is Exchanging The Lies of the World for The Liberating Truth of God’s Word.
Living Fearless is about discovering your true identity in Christ and learning to live from a place of peace instead of fear. Jamie is a former police officer turned conflict-resolution specialist and he shares real stories—from war zones to everyday life—showing how fear holds people back from becoming who God made them to be.
At the core of the book is a simple but powerful process:
Ask God who He says you are
Replace fear-based thinking with identity-based truth
Live courageously in alignment with that identity
The book teaches that when you know your true identity, you no longer need to prove, perform, or protect. You can step into any situation with clarity, peace, and purpose.
It’s part personal testimony, part spiritual guide, and a clear call to live boldly and authentically by listening to God’s voice.
If you’re gonna get this book, grab the Guided Journal as well to enhance your journey of growing in your identity. 10/10.
