We recently connected with Vince Lehr and have shared our conversation below.
VINCE, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I’ve always been raised if you commit to doing something, you do it and do it well. It makes you wiser in your commitments and more driven to succeed. When failure isn’t an option hard work is often the solution.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’ve been self employed for 20 years and recently created Beer Man, a store for craft beer lovers that also sells craft cider, specialty drinks and South Carolina’s largest selection of Mead.
Beer Man is an idea I’ve had in my mind about 10 years and put into action in 2022. Our goal is to provide a pleasant, fulfilling craft beer shopping experience for craft connoisseurs and novices alike. We’re constantly evolving as customer needs are recognized and met.
We also are community driven, participating in local events as time allows and raising money for local children’s charities.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My favorite saying is “Retail is Detail” by Sam Walton, and I use details to set us apart from competitors big and small. The store is always clean, well stocked, faced, and organized so that each customer gets the same experience.
I try to think like a customer instead of like a business owner. I listen and observe what they do and how they interact with the store and adapt it based on those observations.
Anybody can provide a product. I try to also provide an enjoyable experience that they won’t get elsewhere.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
In retail, I’d say when you are young take advantage of every opportunity to learn as many aspects of the industry as possible. Over years those experiences will develop into strengths. Along the way you’ll figure out which strengths you are passionate about and hopefully you’ll be in a position to capitalize on those. Everything you learned along the way will just enhance your passions.
