We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vincent Moore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Vincent, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I was blessed to be raised by two hardworking talented black parents that came from humble southern beginnings. Born into a military family in the 60’s; both my parents took every opportunity to instill in me deep character values, faith, discipline, cultural heritage, and encouragement. One such times; there was a need to find travel for our little league basketball team to the Championship game. I was the captain of my team; yet the rare difference was; I was living in Europe as a military black kid in the 70’s which required travel to another European country. My father said I have an opportunity to get transport, accommodation, and meals, but he said I had to be the one to ask his boss for it.
So I found myself walking with my father down the military base corridors; to where two sharply dressed Marine’s stood in front of a big double door. When we entered that room; my father came to an extreme attention, so I just copied him. (Vincent/Legacy Chef laughs)
It turned out; I was standing in front of the U.S. Four Star General Alexander Haig; Supreme Allied Commander in Europe. The General would later go on to serve as the US Secretary of State under former President Ronald Reagan.
The General congratulated me and my team for our success to getting to the championship finals and asked what he could do to help. I stood there; with my mouth open; till my father said the General asked you a question.
I realized in that moment I was the only one in the room to get what was needed; So I quickly stated transportation, places to stay, and meals…Sir! The General smiled; looked me directly in my eyes and said, Absolutely!…consider it done and then offered me advise and pointers on my game style.
Apparently, the General had all our little league games filmed to watch because he was a genuine fan of youth excellence; regardless of how different you looked. When we left the General’s office; my father said never forget this moment. From that moment and others like it, if I am the stand out person in the room; I take ownership of that fact. I recognizing my difference and talent has brought me the success I have accomplished. I continue to find in my culinary life, it’s much better to have an attitude of learning about others; which is a much more rewarding experience than being closed to seeking opportunities due to surface visual differences.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Over seven plus years ago as the Legacy Chef™️ brand lifted off; I started an unique southern culinary recipe videos series online focused on showing many different delicious ways of cooking with craft beer. What?!… you may be thinking what does food cooked with craft beer have to do with delicious? I also come from great line of culinary chefs from New Orleans; and I can say from day one of my seven plus years as Legacy Chef; its true it really is delicious! Think of craft beer as a cooking seasoning; each beer style is fantastic for the right type of culinary dishes and desserts. My soulful recipes are constantly expanding to even healthier recipes cooked with gluten free craft beers and for those with certain dairy and food allergy aversions; yet not lacking on southern deliciousness! I was told years ago by my doctor I had to change what I eat due to blood related stress conditions; so I can seriously relate that it’s the important to not just eat healthier foods, but it’s really got to taste good too. I made it my passion to create southern soulful recipes to embody tasty flavor with non-dairy, gluten free, organic farm & plant-based ingredients; that you can’t believe it taste so good! We have a saying down south; we call it being pleasantly tricked. (Vincent/Legacy Chef…laughs).
I developed for your convenience an easy access by phone or Smart TV; for anyone to follow along and get great online video recipes to cook in your own kitchen or outdoor Barbecue. If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
If I could narrow down three top areas of qualities of importance to me and what drives me; first is my faith in God….that inspires any and all talents I have should be used positively for those around me. Second, remain hopeful; for nothing of value comes without me learning from moving past life’s blind-side challenges. Thirdly, knowing my niche; on why and what I am doing that is needed, different and special to benefit others.
I remember being asked as I was just starting my business; what was my culinary business all about? I was so excited about what I wanted to do and all it’s different ways it could evolve; I practically gave them a full business presentation with slides. I was so sure the more I said they would be mesmerized right? Well… they responded; good luck with that and quickly walked away. (Vincent/Legacy Chef…laughs) Have you every experienced a similar response?
My best suggestions for individuals early in their business journey. Be sure to learn to share short peaking responses to all interested parties about what you do; and not long details on how you did it. Can I get an Amen on that? (Vincent/Legacy Chef… laughs) Also, get out there and meet folks through multi-media outlets sources. I want to give a special thank you to my Double Award Winning Celebrity Publicist; Ms. Desirae Benson at https://www.DesiraeBenson.com in helping me to shine in this way. In today’s world our modern internet allows more connections and conversation with people in your surrounding area to expand globally. It will also help you to develop further in your business brand and in your personal three areas of important qualities.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
Definitely, I believe in focusing on your best talents that you are strong in first. Though I firmly believe to discover what areas are your strengths; will come from asking those in your circle of influence. What do I mean by that?
Let me share a part of my story; if I may? When I was in the beginning of my journey to entrepreneurship I had prayed; then decided that it was time to start and create my own business; but in what strength or talent? I asked those in my inner circle that were both positive and critically minded on what talents they felt that I did good. Note…. I didn’t mention anything about I wanted to start a business to them. They responded back pretty quickly.
I looked and found the common response they all agreed upon was food dishes and recipes I created.
Then…came the fun part; as I asked each of them why they wrote their answer. One shared about how special it was that I taught their son how to make a delicious dish from scratch who had very low self-esteem in doing anything right; another person expressing how moved they were that I created an original non-allergy/healthier recipe they could final eat that tasted incredible, then another story about how my signature southern ribs creation helped a single Mom’s son get through his Grandfather’s passing (his grandfather was known for his ribs too).
After hearing these inspiring stories like these helped me focus my business qualities ; I realized I had to embrace my natural strengths first to build a business brand reflective of those best qualities. By focusing on those best qualities; I believe is a better vantage point to help identify and improve areas I am not as strong in too.
