Meet Virginie Bavaud

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Virginie Bavaud a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Virginie , great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.

I developed my ability to take risks because I realized that some opportunities are too important to let pass. When I was 20, I decided to move from Switzerland to the United States to attend a dance school. It was a huge step: I would be far from my family, in a new country, knowing no one, and unfamiliar with the language and local customs.

What pushed me to take this risk was that it was something I truly cared about, a goal I had set for myself for years. I knew that if I wanted to pursue my dream seriously, I had to take the chance and embrace the risk.

Through this experience, I learned to trust myself, embrace uncertainty, and face challenges with determination. I realized that taking risks is about opening myself to new opportunities and giving myself the chance to grow, to try, to succeed, or to fail. Both success and failure are important parts of the process, and each teaches me something valuable. Taking risks is also a way to build trust in myself and continually push my boundaries.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am a professional dancer based in New York, originally from Switzerland. I moved to the United States at 20 to attend a dance school, and after completing my studies, I decided to stay to pursue my career professionally. For the past few years, I’ve been building my path in dance independently, finding auditions and projects on my own, which has taught me to be proactive, adaptable, and resilient. I work in a variety of dance styles, but my focus is primarily on street styles, hip hop, jazz, street jazz, and I also dance a lot in heels, exploring commercial styles. These styles allow me to express myself creatively while staying versatile and adaptable in different projects.

Looking ahead, one of my main goals is to obtain my artist visa later this year, which will allow me to continue living and working in the United States and fully pursue my dreams. I also have big aspirations in dance. I aspire to perform with major artists, appear in music videos and shows, go on tours, and eventually develop my own projects. While I haven’t choreographed extensively yet, I plan to create my own video projects to showcase my work and express myself as a dancer and artist. Another one of my goals is to join a dance agency, Being part of an agency, would be an amazing way to open more opportunities, connect with new projects, and grow professionally.

I also prioritize taking care of myself my physical and mental health, my nutrition and making sure I’m surrounded by positive, supportive people. It’s important for me not only to be around good people, but also to contribute to their well-being, creating an environment where everyone feels supported and valued.

Ultimately, my journey as a dancer is about growth, passion, and sharing my creativity with the world. Every opportunity, big or small, is a step toward realizing my dreams, and I’m excited to see where this path will take me…

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. Passion and curiosity, staying motivated and genuinely loving what you do. No matter how many years of experience you have, the most important thing is to keep your love and passion for your craft alive, as it drives growth, creativity, and resilience.

2. Adaptability and fearlessness , being able to adjust to new situations quickly, whether it’s a different style of dance, a new team, or an unexpected challenge. It’s about staying confident even when things are uncertain, learning from mistakes, and using every experience as an opportunity to grow.

3. Determination , staying committed to your goals, pushing through challenges, and never giving up on what you truly want to achieve.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents have done for me, is always supporting me, no matter the path I chose. From the very beginning, they were there for me, emotionally, encouraging me to keep going even when things were challenging. They have never stopped me, doubted me, or held me back in pursuing my dreams. Even if I moved halfway across the world, their main concern has always been my happiness. I’m incredibly grateful for their constant support, guidance, and belief in me, it has shaped who I am and continues to inspire me every day.
