We were lucky to catch up with Vivian Campbell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Vivian, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I have been very fortunate to have an outgoing personality. People tell me they love the energy I bring to a room. I am not saying this to brag, I am not sure why people even say it. I just love approaching every day with a can do attitude. I love having fun and being of service to others. I think it shows up in everything I do. My actions are genuine. If I decide I don’t want to do something, I don’t do it. I am not going to waste my time and energy. I believe in being present and giving 300% in what I do. I am a trainer and speaker and I was telling a client when I present to a group, I have to give 300% to get 100% back. He looked at me and ‘That’s very interesting’. I said ‘Have you ever just given 100%? What did you get back? I bet it was less than 100%’. I go into an event and know what I want to get out of it. I have learned that I need to give more than what I expect in return.
I have done catering and event sales in my career. I was fortunate to exceed sales goals because I was authentic with the client. It didn’t feel like selling. I heard what they wanted and showed them how we could make it happen. If we couldn’t make it happen, I would refer them elsewhere. Simply being honest gave me my confidence. Seeing a smile on the faces of my client and their guests gave me the self-esteem that I was doing a great job.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
In my consulting business, Vivian Campbell Consulting, My passion for helping others shines through, whether it’s optimizing client efficiency or delivering top-notch customer experiences through team training. My entire business has been based on referrals. I have forged great business relationships and friendships and the referrals continue to come. I enjoy going to companies and training about the importance of hospitality. This is an important matter for all industries that have customers.
I am also passionate about my inspirational apparel business, I Am What I Am Shop. We believe consistent inspiration can propel one to accomplish anything. We provide ways to show your strength and inner beauty. We offer stylish products and accessories to wear and surround yourself with positive reminders throughout the day. If we had more motivation and encouragement around us, our world would be better. We have mugs with different affirmations that are perfect for sipping the support you need all throughout the day. We have water bottles that are great for quenching your thirst of support when on the go.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
People may or may not have heard this next bit of advice. It truly depends on your circle of friends and colleagues. If you have an idea, get started. People think I have to wait until I get all the answers to my questions before I can make a move. Just make the first move and get the answers along the way. If your circle of friends and colleagues is not a positive influence, just shorten the amount of time you spend with them. Spend more time with people who help you grow closer to your vision. PDF stands for portable document format. (maybe you knew that and maybe you didn’t) It is an easy acronym to remember. I use it to remember to stay positive, determined, and focused!
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Networking groups and surrounding myself with like-minded people. When you are in a networking group, you will find that other people are having the same challenges that you are. When you share your experience with other like-minded folks, you get options/suggestions on how you can overcome your challenge. These groups also provide support and encouragement. We all go through periods of not knowing how to handle situations that come up. In a group of like-minded people, you can get advice from more experienced business owners. You will get fresh ideas from new business owners. You can get referrals to other people who can help walk you through a situation. The possibilities are endless when you increase your circle with the right people. I had just finished a networking event and the marketing specialist of the group did a forty-five-minute class where she discussed available grants for businesses and then shared a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis worksheet for each of us to do on our companies. This is all helpful information when starting or taking your company to the next level.
