We recently connected with Vivian Darst and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Vivian, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My journey actually started in a completely different field – I was an elopement photographer specializing in capturing the raw beauty of couples exchanging vows in Colorado’s breathtaking landscapes. It was an incredibly fulfilling experience, helping these couples create unforgettable memories in epic locations.
However, as I delved deeper into my work, I realized that my passion extended beyond just capturing moments; it was about crafting experiences and helping people bring their visions to life. I found immense joy in not only photographing these elopements but also in helping couples plan and execute their dream ceremonies.
This realization sparked something within me – a desire to extend my expertise beyond photography and into web design and brand strategy. I’ve always been drawn to the entrepreneurial spirit, particularly that of female solo entrepreneurs. Having built my own successful business, I knew firsthand the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship.
So, I made the decision to pivot my focus and channel my passion into helping small businesses – especially female entrepreneurs – thrive in the digital world. I wanted to utilize my skills in web design and branding to empower these entrepreneurs to stand out from their competition in a way that’s truly authentic to them.
For me, it’s about more than just creating visually appealing websites; it’s about crafting a digital presence that captures the essence of who they are and what they stand for. Whether it’s through thoughtful design elements, compelling websites, or strategic branding, my goal is to help these businesses establish a strong and memorable online presence.
My purpose as a web designer and brand strategy specialist is rooted in my desire to empower others to succeed. By leveraging my experience and expertise, I strive to make a meaningful impact on the lives and businesses of those I work with, helping them turn their dreams into reality.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Transitioning from photography to web design and branding strategy is a significant shift, and several qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge likely played pivotal roles in my journey, would be:
1. Visual creativity: As a photographer, my eye for composition, color, and visual storytelling play a big role as a web designer and branding strategist. Because of my ability to conceptualize and execute compelling visuals allowed me to create visually striking websites and cohesive branding elements that resonate with my clients and their target audiences.
2. Relevant experience: Having been a photographer myself, I understand the challenges, aspirations, and creative visions of fellow entrepreneurs in the photography industry. I know what their audience and ideal clients would want to see on their websites for them to book.
3. Technical proficiency in Showit and Squarespace: I am self taught. There is a ton of information online where you can build on your skills if you want to become a web designer. Just practice a lot and create mock ups!
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Being a solo entrepreneur is hard. Your business relies solely on you to make it keep going. When you start to feel alone, I highly recommend creating a safe community with other solo entrepreneurs in your industry. Having someone to talk to, who knows what it feels like to be working on a business that you love, really helps.
Reach out and build that community for yourself.
