We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vivianna Hernandez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Vivianna , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic stems from my upbringing. My parents were prime examples of work hard and you will be rewarded in due time. Both of my parents worked full time jobs and still managed to have dinner on the table every night, and be there for sports cheering me on. When i finally decided what i wanted as a career that drive and work ethic that was instilled in me at a young age came alive when i figured out what my passion was.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
At a young age I used to help my parents on the weekend catering. It was something I was proud of i saw the happiness in people during the event and i remember feeling so proud of my parents and and also myself for being apart of the process. One of my first jobs was as an event coordinator for discovery zone. I would make the pizzas for the party, serve them, sing songs with the kids, play games and cut the cake for the guest. It was so gratifying. Every job after that was in the hospitality industry. My passion for food and customer service helped to fi ally decide on culinary school. I realized soon after that that i wanted to be a chef. I was 28 and eager to begin my career. I ra ed through the industry learning everything I could… i soon realized that I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I wanted to create a brand and give people a special experience.
I am now 4 years down the line a Food Truck owner and days away from Opening up Restaurant. Im here… ive arrived yet it hasnt hit me… until those doors are open in Norwalk and the restaurant sign goes up will it feel real!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1) Take care of your health both Physically, Spiritually and Emotionally.
2) Do not cut corners. Meaning trust in the process. The rewards are worth it in the end
3) Hire an accountant. Dont get in over your head with the numbers part. Find someone you trust who deals with clients in your field.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
The best thing to do whenever I feel this way is make a list What do I need to do on this list now and what can wait till tomorrow. Sometimes all I need is to feel the small rewards and i can push through. My list can be as small as washing the dishes at home or doing my laundry.
