We recently connected with Vivien Luo and have shared our conversation below.
Vivien, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
For me, creativity is all about curiosity and an open mind. Design trends change rapidly, and I am always curious about the latest happenings in the design world. To keep my creativity flowing, I enjoy engaging in discussions with other designers and professionals, exchanging information, and learning how they tackle problems. The intriguing part is that everyone’s mindsets are different; sometimes, you see designers approach problems in ways you never thought of. It’s not only a learning experience but also a fun way to hear different stories and spark new ideas.
I also pay attention to how new technologies can possibly change the way we used to design. For instance, as AI continues to disrupt various industries, including design, there are significant innovations in design tools that greatly enhance efficiency and provide data-driven insights, helping to make informed decisions. Moreover, AR, VR, and mixed reality are also under experimentation to change the traditional industrial working mode. In a shift in many industries, learning how to navigate these new technologies provides designers with a bunch of new opportunities.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a designer, with a primary focus on creating graphic and digital products. I have a deep passion for crafting designs that are inclusive, making them accessible to people from diverse backgrounds. I’m truly grateful for the experience of different projects that have helped me develop and improve my skills. Some of my works have received recognition in international design competitions, including Muse Creative Award, Graphic Design USA, DNA Paris Design Award, Hermes Creative Award, and more. These recognitions are an honor for me.
I build distinctive brand image and engaging user experience. As a designer, intention is important. For each project, I conduct thorough research into who I am designing for, who will see or use it, and their preferences. Having research insights as a strong backup is crucial; it helps in making the right decisions. A distinguished brand should possess a strong brand identity. The logo, typography, colors, and imagery all contribute to a brand’s personality and values. Beyond the visual aspects, user experience holds equal importance. A pleasant user journey cannot be complete without intuitive design. Understanding people’s patterns of interacting with digital products helps designers craft a seamless user experience.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
For me personally, I would emphasize a growth mindset, the ability to let go and focusing on your own. Especially when times you failed to achieve something. Perceive setbacks not as negations toward yourself, but as an opportunity to gain new and versatile insights. While life inevitably presents chaos and noise, not everything deserves your energy. Being able to declutter and listen to your intuition can be helpful.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Of course, I believe in like-minded power, and networking is essential for designers. I would love to collaborate with other creative individuals and brand owners who seek distinctive brand identity and digital presence. I’m also open to connecting with young folks who are seeking inspiration in the industry, as I’m grateful for the help I received and of course, I’d love to pass it on to those who may require support!
