We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Vrishti Savalani. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Vrishti below.
Vrishti, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I grew up in a family that really valued having a strong work ethic. I noticed it in my parents first and not too long started to see it in myself. I have a huge passion for what I do and so finding the motivation to work comes pretty easy. But when it comes to having the discipline and pushing through those moments when things get tough, that is something that was instilled in me long ago just by looking at how my parents used to embody it.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a multidisciplinary writer, which is just a fancy way of saying I like words and I do a lot with them. I love telling stories. At the heart of my work is storytelling and being able to captivate people with different kinds of narratives. My introduction to writing was through editorial work, which is something I still pursue now. Recently, I’ve also branched out into marketing through copywriting and content strategy. At the moment I’m doing a mix of editorial projects targeted towards women’s health, beauty, and fitness, while also providing marketing services for companies in the impact sector.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
What I found helped me develop my skills and my career early on was always leading with curiosity, saying yes to new experiences, and being disciplined in my work.
I’d be lying if I said I was someone who was always asking questions. I would get shy or sometimes fear I’d have a “stupid question” to ask. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve also built up more confidence to understand that asking questions comes from a place of curiosity and wanting clarity. You’re essentially doing what you can to set yourself up for success and therefore set your team or whoever you’re working for up for success.
Change is inevitable, and one of the best ways to be resilient towards it is to embrace new experiences. Change has been a constant in my life, which is why I never found it hard to say yes to new things, but I’ve never felt confident when I’m actually in those new experiences. I said yes to moving to the United States four years ago just to pursue higher education. Since then, I’ve grown professionally and personally. I’ve been more confident in being in the unknown and I find myself more excited to take part in new experiences rather than be daunted by them. Say yes because you never know where it’s going to lead you.
While exploration and curiosity are important, one of the things I’ve learned is that none of that matters if you don’t have discipline. As a creative, it’s easy to be burnt out and lose that creative spark. Sometimes, all it takes is showing up, in my case at my desk and my laptop, and just doing what you do best even if it’s the worst version of it. I found that whenever I’m in those moments I don’t expect myself to create something, I’m simply there to continue practicing this skill even if it doesn’t yield a good story.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Aside from learning my work ethic from them, one of the biggest impacts my parents have on me is their support. Pursuing a creative career comes with many uncertainties and it’s a very traditional career path. They’ve wholeheartedly supported me in wanting to be a writer. Even though this isn’t an area they’re familiar with, they’re always open to learning about my experiences and how they could help me grow in ways I wouldn’t even think of. Just by showing up, they’ve helped me navigate the uncertainty and fear that comes with it.
