We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vusa (Vusala) Bentley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Vusa (Vusala) with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
From my upbringing- I grew up in a small town in Khachmaz, 1.5 hours from the Capital City Baku, Azerbaijan. As a child, I was sent to my nana’s as soon house as the school was done. She lived in a very small village wherein the lifestyle was 180 degrees different than that of the small town where i lived. Everything was obtained via manual and physical labor-water had to be hand pumped from the well, bath time was a ritual that took almost half of the afternoon to prepare, yard and garden work was part of my daily chores. Nana making her signature bread, lavash, was probably my favorite ritual. On a rainy day, i will curl up with a blanket near a warm tandoori oven as she rolled delicately thin lavash. I had to wait for
the bread to cool off and her voice still echoes in my head, “ you have to let the bred to breathe and come alive.” We had every kind of fruit you can imagine and life was simple and looking back, it seemed so “primitive,” but that lifestyle prepared me to appreciate modern “tools” and make the most of the 24 hours than most people in a given day!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
As many people do, I “wear many hats”- I am a mom of two wonderful young men, fur momma of two adorable cats, employee, and Endurance Athlete. I also own a part-time assisted stretching and flexibility business. I am a certified trainer and nutritionist. My home is my temple and I love keeping it tidy and clean. Cooking is a very intimate process and definitely my love language. To me cooking is a therapy that gets orchestrated in my soul, envisioned in my mind and prepared and fed with love! I am not joking when I say “I hear the smell of food in my mind” then I prepare it! It is kind of hard to explain! A part about my athletic journey- I am on a mission to travel all 50 states and perform a-one-hour forearm plank for various causes and events! It started as part of my healing journey after divorce and the stronger I become the more I learned about humility and compassion. I am also in the process of writing a book about relationships that I hope self-publish soonday. Please stay connected via my website: www.fitnutsimplified.com and Facebook: United We Plank
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I was never athletic as a child or even as a young adult. I started my athletic journey in my early 30-s and frankly besides health and lifestyle aspects of it, i realized that principles of progressive overload can be applied in every area of life. Anything you start, start small and stay at it and be consistent. And eventually, you will “grow a muscle.” There will be days you are too tired, too sick, or too lazy, too heartbroken, instead of giving up , just do something super simple but stay at it. The magic is in the process, the reward is journey, the vision is in the outcome! As I always say, “I am the reward.” It is important that you understand that!
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes, I would like to invite Bussiness Owners, sponsors and Athletes from all walks of life to join my “United We Plank” initiative. Come together and plank, donate, uplift, cheer, and build a new community that is different but wholesome and help make our communities a place better one plank and one state at a time. United we plank and United we are strong and healed at the core! Let us raise collective consciousness by being going and doing good. As Americans we have been and always be beacon of light, hope, and inspiration and united we can!
