We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Wakane Luke. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Wakane below.
Hi Wakane , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I am from a small island and was raised in the island way, with a big dream to become a singer.
I want to be a singer that my family and my island can be proud of.
I have worked hard since I was 10 years old and I have never stopped singing.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a singer, actor, and model based in the Bay Area, California.
From the age of 10 to 20, I was active in the entertainment industry in Japan, working as a R&B singer, TV and local radio host, and also as an instructor for young entertainers.
I moved to the United States in 2005 and later signed an indie record deal in San Diego as a reggae singer, touring across the country as a recording artist.
Currently, I am based in the Bay Area, performing the National Anthem for many professional sports teams in California.
My next big performance will be for NVIDIA at their ceremony in November.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Because English is my second language, I had to learn in a hard way while living here.
But I always keep a mindset of being flexible. I believe you should not set your mind only on one thing, be open to the environment and feel the vibe of people so you can understand their culture and background.
I also learned this from R&B music. I was always flexible with the tone, the range, and I learned to adapt my feelings to any kind of music and be fluid.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has been one of my biggest supports for mental health.
Of course, my family and friends have always been there for me, but at the end of the day I know I have to take care of myself.
With 15 years of practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it has helped me build confidence, clear my mind, and even create lifelong friendships.
Now I am in the position to teach kids self-defense and help them become confident. The pure energy from children always reminds me to stay humble, enjoy the small things in life, and be happy with who you are today.

- Other: I am a singer still on my journey, always doing my best. I believe life is a circle, and everything you give—whether good or bad—comes back to you.
My dream is to be a singer who can reach people’s souls, not through a genre, but simply through my voice.
