Meet Wassim Nohra

We recently connected with Wassim Nohra and have shared our conversation below.

Wassim, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?

I’ve never followed the system or the rules in any successful steps in my life, never looked back but kept walking.
Taking risks is an inherent part of pursuing any goal, although the nature and degree of risk can vary significantly. In my professional experience, embracing risk-taking has been crucial to my career advancement. While I’ve pushed my boundaries extensively and I mean it, I’ve always found that careful planning and a keen awareness of my limitations are essential for success. These factors, along with the acceptance of potential setbacks, have been instrumental in my journey.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Working in the Film & TV industry is an incredible privilege. It is not only a fulfilling career but also one of the greatest art forms, as it combines artistic and creative elements with aesthetic principles. As a Director of Photography (DP) with over 25 years of experience gained globally by traveling & executing projects worldwide in over 5 continents, sometimes under risky and tough situations while meeting the excellent interpersonal skills and top-quality productions.

My extensive portfolio and experience have afforded me the opportunity to work on a diverse range of productions around the globe, including films, documentaries, travel shows, corporate projects, and extreme adventure-explorer series. Through these experiences, I have been fortunate enough to engage with diverse cultures worldwide. The most rewarding aspect of my work has been the opportunity to document the lives, traditions, and habits of other people and diverse communities. Living and eating alongside them has given me a profound appreciation for our shared human experience and the rich diversity of our world.

My work has been showcased globally and screened at numerous international film festivals, garnering multiple awards and nominations.

My passion and motivation to the camera drive me to work tirelessly, often seven days a week around the clock. This dedication stems from a deep love for what I do and has taught me that nothing should block your path or prevent you from achieving your goal especially when you have the willpower and you love what you do.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I believe the three most impactful factors in my journey have been: my love and boundless passion for my work, my eagerness to learn and expand my knowledge of our field daily, and the connections I’ve built with people and colleagues worldwide.

In the ever-evolving field, the pursuit of knowledge is a continuous journey. There’s always something new to learn, discover, and explore. Stagnation simply isn’t an option.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

Absolutely, there were many factors that contributed to my professional development & helped me train and build my skills and knowledge to be successful and I can’t specify one thing. Mentorship, continuous learning, reading books and articles “technical articles”, staying abreast of the latest technology, dedicated training, and invaluable experience by traveling & working with international crews all played a significant role in shaping my career.
