Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Wei Wei Chang. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Wei Wei, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
This paragraph and story are taken from my book, the Lens of Love. My confidence and self-esteem grow as my relationship with God grows. The foundation of my confidence and self-esteem is based on my faith in Jesus Christ.
A. W. Tozer, the author of the classic devotional, The Knowledge of the Holy, is quoted as saying, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”1 How we see God is the foundation of how we see ourselves.
When I was an atheist, I saw myself as an ugly duckling through the tainted lens with which I viewed myself. I refused to attend the physical education class during my first year of college. Everyone had to wear a swimsuit for that class. I didn’t own a swimsuit and never wanted to show that much skin to others. Perhaps I was afraid of the water or ashamed of my body, but I preferred to take the penalty for missing that class than show myself in a swimsuit.
After I became a believer, my self-esteem started to improve. In early 2000, after working for a few years, I decided to buy a house. My realtor was very complimentary. “Look at you,” she said, “I wish my daughter was like you. You’ve got everything together; you have a good job, and travel worldwide. Now you’re getting a house on your own.” Her words affirmed my self-perception: Hey, I’m doing pretty good. I’m successful. Subtly, this sense of success led me to a false image of my importance.
The demotion smashed my false image of importance. The brokenness from the demotion and the healing that followed brought me to see my true value as a precious daughter of God—without strings attached. The lens through which I see myself now is not completely untainted but I am on a journey to return to the point of seeing myself through the lens of love.
The book of Romans tells us, “God has given me grace to speak a warning about pride. I would ask each of you to be emptied of self-promotion and not create a false image of your importance. Instead, honestly assess your worth by using your God-given faith as the standard of measurement, and then you will see your true value with an appropriate self-esteem” (Romans 12:3 TPT).
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
In 2018, I founded Imagine Life Coaching with the mission of inspiring individuals to imagine a life enriched with God. This venture represented a significant shift for me as I entered the entrepreneurial sphere after a decade devoted to homemaking. Before embracing homemaking, my professional world revolved around corporate jobs and executive positions.
The transition into entrepreneurship proved distinctly different from my corporate background, demanding a learning curve, particularly in areas like online marketing. Throughout this journey, I made substantial investments in personal development, actively seeking guidance from life and business coaches.
In 2020, guided by divine inspiration, I authored and published a non-fiction book titled “The Lens of Love: A Fresh Perspective on Increasing Intimacy with God, Enhancing Relationships, and Discovering Contentment.” Witnessing its positive impact and transformation on numerous lives fills me with immense gratitude.
I firmly believe that every life experience, even the challenging ones, serves a purpose. Having navigated a public demotion in my corporate career and grappled with the ensuing feelings of shame and failure, I’ve gained a profound understanding of those undergoing significant life transitions. My personal struggles fuel my passion for assisting individuals in overcoming their failures. Today, drawing from my journey, I work as a Christian life and career coach, aiding people in finding success.
As a life coach, I specialize in guiding individuals through significant life events with an infusion of faith, hope, and peace. Additionally, I provide coaching to help individuals connect with God for spiritual and emotional healing, facilitating their progression toward a purposeful life. As a career coach, I assist individuals in navigating career transitions by rebuilding their identity and confidence, positioning them to secure their dream jobs and achieve career success.
Imagine Life Coaching extends its reach through various channels, offering live events, online courses, workshops, books, ebooks, blog posts, and other digital products. These resources can be explored further at www.weiweichang.com.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities have profoundly influenced me: 1. A living relationship with God, 2. A willingness to serve others, and 3. A heart of humility.
The path to success in business may require patience, as things take time to gain momentum. However, every experience is valuable. In due course, various elements—your learning, efforts, character development, financial investments, and lessons learned—will align, leading you to fulfill the unyielding desire that God has placed within you—your who, what, where, and when will converge eventually. Therefore, perseverance is crucial when facing challenges; do not quit quickly and early.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
At the outset of my journey, I received advice to establish a business based on my strengths or areas of expertise. Similar to many authors, I don’t perceive myself as proficient in marketing and sales. I prefer to remain behind the scenes, focusing on writing blogs and books. However, I recognized the importance of improving my communication with the audience. How can I make an impact if people are unaware of the ways I strive to assist them? Consequently, I began investing in marketing. While there is still more for me to learn, my proficiency in marketing has significantly improved compared to one or two years ago.
