We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wendy Jordan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Wendy with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I got my work ethic from the strong, resilient women in my family. Work ethic has always been in my blood. My grandmother has always been an entrepreneur and had a hustle mentality, she didn’t fisnish school, but she owns property and she has been a beautician for over 40 years. My mother was a single parent of 3 children and she worked hard to make sure her kids were well taken care of. Growing up seeing the work ehtics of these 2 women, I had no choice but to have the work ethic in my blood.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a Promoter/Curator and I’ve been in the business for over 10 years. I started with my Non-Profit Organization SASO. I wanted to raise awareness for survivors of sexual assault/abuse. I love poetry and I wanted to bring awareness and raise funding to help surviviors. Every year we have a Poetry SLAM4SAAM ( Sexual Assault Awareness Month), and the funds raised are donated to organizations that have the resources to asisst surviviors. We have donated funds to and worked with The Chicago Center For Child Advocacy, YWCA, Georgia Center For Child Advocacy and RAINN. Our organization works with amazing poets in Chicago and Atlanta.
I also curate open mic events in Chicago and Atlanta Come Get Saturday Open Mic. We just celebrated our 6th year Anniversary at Kat’s Cafe. We have monthly, weekly and quarterly open mic events around Atlanta. We also have events in Chicago. Our next stop for our quarterly open mics is Dallas, Texas.
I love being a curator because I can bring my ideas to life, I have the opportunity to network with amazing artist and business owners and meet like minded individuals. Our slogan is Poetry Is Life and it is because you can hear spokenword or poetry on everyday life circumstances.
Our next event is Saturday, Dec 2nd Season’s Change (A Quarterly Open Mic) WInter Storm Edition at Calabar and Grill. You can find us every 3rd Saturday at Kat’s Cafe and every Tuesday at Trap City Cafe.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three skills I believe were and still are impactful in my journey are loving what you do, communication and building relationships. My advice for people early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop and improve these skills would be to make sure its your passion and not try doing it just because someone else is doing it, always have an open line of communication, be honest and tell people what you are looking for, your plans, goals..etc. When you are open, honest and keep a good line of communication that helps builds relationships.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
As we are moving our Season’s Change event to Dallas, Tx, we are looking for poets and singers to feature for our quarterly events. You can reach out to us on IG @_comegetsom
