Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Wendy Reimiller-Reed. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Wendy , thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
Despite facing haters and naysayers, I persist by embodying a “watch me” attitude, believing in my abilities, and staying teachable. I’m not competitive with others but constantly challenge myself to improve. Instead of letting negativity affect me, I find humor in it and focus on positive self-talk, recognizing that the words and actions of others reflect their own struggles. I challenge myself daily and strive to be brave in all endeavors
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I specialize in revitalizing old, forgotten pieces of furniture, breathing new life into them to make them usable again. Whether acquired through purchase or given to me by those seeking to repurpose instead of landfilling, I transform these pieces into something beautiful and functional. Alongside selling paint and DIY products online and in local shops, such as AnitaTrinket in Fleetwood, PA, we host monthly workshops and events to guide individuals in the art of furniture transformation. Through these gatherings and our Facebook page, we reach people near and far, offering quick product tutorials and empowering individuals to create their dream spaces affordably. It’s incredibly fulfilling to assist individuals in realizing their visions affordably, empowering them to create the home environment that suits their needs while fostering confidence and creativity. I find immense joy in connecting with new people and helping them achieve their goals through accessible and user-friendly DIY solutions.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities that have been most impactful are resilience, empathy, and maintaining a sense of humor. Resilience has allowed me to bounce back from setbacks and continue pushing forward despite encountering obstacles or negative feedback from others. Empathy has enabled me to understand where others are coming from, even when faced with criticism or negativity, and to respond with compassion rather than defensiveness. Maintaining a sense of humor has helped me to not take myself too seriously and to find levity in difficult situations, which has been crucial for maintaining perspective and staying grounded.
For those early in their journey, my advice would be to cultivate these qualities intentionally. To develop resilience, embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and learn from setbacks rather than letting them discourage you. To enhance empathy, practice active listening and seek to understand the perspectives of others, even when you disagree. And finally, don’t underestimate the power of humor in navigating adversity; find ways to laugh at yourself and find lightness in difficult situations.
Furthermore, it’s essential to surround yourself with a supportive community – genuine friends and like-minded individuals who serve as your cheerleaders. These allies, who understand your journey and stand by you through thick and thin, not only provide valuable sounding boards during stressful times but also bolster your confidence in your abilities. Seek out mentors who can offer guidance and wisdom as you navigate your path. Building this network of support can be instrumental in persevering despite the challenges posed by detractors and critics.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed, I turn to nature for solace and rejuvenation, often by taking a long run alone or enjoying a leisurely walk with my black Labrador, sometimes with my husband by my side. Whether it’s the solitude of a solo run or the shared joy of walking our dog together, being outdoors helps us both find peace amidst chaos. Our camping adventures also provide a retreat from the stresses of daily life, allowing us to disconnect and immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature.
One of the highlights of our outdoor adventures is the laughter we share. Whether it’s over a silly mishap while setting up our tent or a funny story shared around the campfire, my husband and I find endless opportunities to laugh together. These moments of lightheartedness not only strengthen our bond but also help us to unwind and forget about our worries, even if just for a little while.
For those feeling overwhelmed, I recommend finding solace in nature and spending quality time with loved ones. Whether it’s a solo run, a walk with your dog, or a camping trip with your partner, prioritize activities that bring you joy and help you recharge. Remember to laugh often and cherish the moments spent with those you love. By embracing the outdoors and nurturing meaningful connections, you can find strength and resilience in the face of adversity.
