We were lucky to catch up with Wendy Williamson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Wendy, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
As a child, I watched my parents build a business from the ground up. I saw the hard work, sacrifice, and dedication that went in to making it the success it is today. But I also saw that they tackled any problem or task with that same attitude and drive. They taught me to always give 100% and that “good enough” is not good enough. As an adult, I have also been lucky to have some amazing mentors who have shown me how to translate that mindset into my daily work and managing a business. It is that work ethic that allows Ken’s Custom Frames to continue to thrive more than 54 years after my parents started it. You can see it in our outstanding customer service and exceptional quality and workmanship which is what sets us apart from our competitors. We never settle for second best and always “think outside the frame” to give our customers the very best service and products possible.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that have most benefited me as a person throughout my journey as a business-owner are consistency, persistence, and organization. Consistency builds trust with both your employees and your customers. It’s hard to develop a positive reputation in any industry without consistency. To be known for something, you need to do it the same way enough times for people to notice. People trust businesses that prove themselves to be reliable and consistent.
By persistence I am referring to showing up over and over again in spite of challenges and roadblocks. The ability of an entrepreneur to remain steadfast, focused and solution-oriented makes their business more likely to succeed.
The benefits of being organized and operating in a generally clutter-free environment are increased productivity and improved performance. This also provides a greater sense of control, which is a vital part of stress management, resilience, and overall well-being. Staying organized also results in being more resourceful, which ultimately saves money because we are more effectively using the resources around us.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I was a young woman and I would get overwhelmed with something, I had a weird quirk where I would just stop what I was doing and go clean the fridge. Looking back on it now, I can see that I did that because cleaning the fridge gave me a sense of control and a task that I knew I could complete from start to finish. I have now learned to manage my stress in a more effective way and follow Desmond Tutu’s advice on how to eat an elephant…a bite at a time. What he meant by this is that everything in life that seems daunting, overwhelming, and even impossible can be accomplished gradually by taking on just a little at a time.
When I’m faced with something that seems overwhelming or impossible, I’ve learned to take a deep breath and just dive in. Once you start, it is really a matter of completing many small tasks and completing tasks is something I’m very good at. Before you know it, that overwhelming something has been whittled away to almost nothing until a few tasks later, you’re done.
My fridge might still be dirty, but I am way more productive than I used to be! Just go for it!
