We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Wenxin Yan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with wenxin below.
Wenxin, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Passion. I think it’s what drives a lot of the things I do. If you see something as just a task you have to do, it takes away a lot of the fun. I’ve always believed that creativity comes from the mix of emotions and experiences in the moment. If you lose your passion for it, you’re not going to do your best work.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hi, I’m Wen Xin. I’m an illustrator, motion designer, and animator. Right now, I’m studying motion and illustration at SCAD. In the design field, I’ve learned a bit of everything—from graphic design to illustration, animation, and now 3D work. I’ve been exploring to find the direction I’m most passionate about.
At first, I’d pick up trendy design ideas from social media and the web, just to get started. I didn’t have a clear style of my own, so I followed the mainstream. But with a lot of practice and tweaks, I started to build my own aesthetic and personal style. Now, I feel like I’m finally finding my groove. For illustration, I’m into designing packaging and posters for brands and companies. For motion design, I focus on creating CG ads for products and brands.
Finding your own design style takes time, but it’s an exciting journey.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Action, choice, and persistence. I think taking action is super important. I used to daydream a lot, but over time I realized that actually doing something speaks way louder than just talking about it. Once you start, you figure out your weaknesses and how to deal with challenges. You can’t accomplish anything by just imagining it.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Lately, I’ve figured out my future direction—I want to be a CG artist. I’ve tried a lot of different things to get here, starting with graphic design, then illustration, and animation. But about six months ago, I got into 3D software and was hooked. I started using my creativity and illustration skills in 3D modeling and ended up creating some really cool and dynamic videos.
