We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Wesley Williams. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Wesley below.
Wesley, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
My optimism stems from my faith and knowing that there is light at the end of the tunnel as long as I stay resilient and constantly attack my goals. It comes from knowing that one song, one connection, one trip or one moment can be the tipping point for my entire life to change in major way. Whenever I feel stagnant or overwhelmed by how far I seemingly have to go until I hit my goal, I always remember that I am closer to where I want to be than where I initially started. My optimism also derives from the understanding that the words you speak have power. I distinctly remember talking to my producer and telling him that I felt we had hit a way with getting our first sync placement. He told me to speak positivity into our careers and our lives and so I began to do just that. 2 weeks later, we received our first major sync placement on Freeform’s Grown-ish. I attribute my optimism to my faith, my family, my friends and the positive mindset I have developed over the years.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Wesley Williams and I am a Midwest-based artist that specializes in Hip-Hop,R&B and Soul. I have been pursuing music, professionally, since 2018 and I would not trade being an artist for anything in the world. I have been fortunate enough to perform in multiple cities and have received sync placements for shows such as All-American, Grown-ish, First Take, Bel-Air and many more. The most exciting aspect of my career is the fact that my music is reaching places all over the globe in many different facets. Whether that be streaming, movies, TV shows, video games or word of mouth, I have received messages and shoutouts from people all over the world showing love to my art! I recently released an EP titled “Here For A Good Time” and I have been receiving amazing feedback from that. I am slated to go on a mini tour run to promote the album so please follow me on socials for updates on that! Besides that, I am currently doing writing and background work for some of my favorite artists. I am from Cleveland, however I will be relocating to LA within the next 8 months. I am excited to begin this next chapter in my life and I am hoping to connect with some other great creatives out there.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey thus far are patience, perseverance and making sure that my sound and vision stand out amongst the crowd! My advice to those just starting out their own journey would be to please patient and kind to yourself, there is no manual or rule book to being an artist or a business owner. Anything built to sustain takes time, a lot of time. Trust your gut and confide in you tribe. Lastly, don’t forget to have fun on your journey!
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My mother is not very knowledgeable of the music business, however she has always afforded me a safe space to create and be an artist. When I was young, she put me in the gospel choir, piano, guitar and drum lessons. She would always preach how important it was to have a creative outlet, as well as, a skill that could always make you money if you leverage it right. She put together a studio space for me in our basement and allowed me the freedom to be as creative as I wanted to be. She also taught me the importance of legitimizing your creative efforts and understanding the business side of releasing your art for public consumption. She is always in my corner and I am forever grateful for her support!
