Meet Wialillian Howard

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wialillian Howard a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Wialillian, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I think my resilience comes from a combination of experience, reflection, and support. Life has thrown challenges my way, and each time I’ve faced them, I’ve learned that I can navigate difficulty and come out stronger on the other side. I also take time to reflect on what each experience teaches me, which helps me respond rather than react when the next challenge comes. And I couldn’t do it alone—having supportive relationships and mentors has been critical. Knowing I’m not facing life’s obstacles by myself gives me strength to keep moving forward.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

At Beyond the Seat, the focus has been on empowering senior leaders and teams to unlock their full potential. What makes Beyond the Seat special is its deeply personalized approach to leadership and talent development, designed to help both C-Suite executives and emerging professionals thrive no matter their experience level or background.

The brand believes leadership is a journey, not just a position, and supports professionals as they move “beyond their seat”—into new possibilities and sustained success.

What’s new?

Real leadership now is less about command & control and more about connection (with people as whole humans), disciplined processes & priorities, and real accountability (to values, to promises).

In today’s climate of constant change and uncertainty, employees are no longer satisfied with what an organization does—they want to understand why it matters. Our research-backed model equips leaders to create that strong center.
Today, it’s less about the “soft stuff”—it’s the foundation of strategic leadership. Aligning the why not only attracts and retains top talent, it also drives sustainable growth, reduces turnover costs, and strengthens organizational agility.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

For me, deep industry knowledge across multiple levels has been critical. When I entered the Organizational Development and Learning fields, I came equipped with a strong toolbox of skills, competencies, assessments, and models—all essential for delivering value. Even after 20 years, I still consider myself a student of the industry. I stay current on trends, research, and new tools, and I continuously engage with coaches, professional associations, and an ever-growing library of reading relevant to my work. Learning never stops.

Advice to those early in their journey:

There are no shortcuts when others rely on your expertise. Invest in yourself by building relationships with mentors and seasoned professionals who can provide honest guidance and feedback. Commit to becoming a lifelong student in your field, and always seek opportunities to grow your knowledge and skills.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

One of my favorite books of all time is You Are the Brand by Mike Kim. The book is a practical guide for professionals and entrepreneurs on how to define, communicate, and live their personal brand in a way that builds trust and influence. It’s about showing up authentically, consistently, and strategically so others know exactly what you stand for and what value you bring.

Three nuggets that have stayed with me:

Authenticity is your superpower – People connect with real, human stories, not polished facades.

Clarity creates opportunities – Clearly defining your strengths and message helps others understand how you can help them.

Consistency builds trust – Showing up reliably over time reinforces your brand and credibility.
