Meet Will Carey

We recently connected with Will Carey and have shared our conversation below.

Will, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I discovered in 10th grade that my purpose in life was to create art and to entertain, and I owe that to my lifelong best friend Chris McNamara. He had started doing high school theater freshman year and had been trying to get me to audition as well, but I was too painfully shy to try that year. Sophomore year he continued and I finally relented and was cast in a small part in a play called The Man Who Came to Dinner. I instantly fell in love with every step of the process of putting on a play. I loved learning lines, discussing my character, building the set, and I instantly felt a sense of community with the people I was doing it with. It is that same sense of joy that doing that play brought me that I have carried into playing in rock bands, acting in films, podcasting, and voice acting for the last 23 years. I owe my life to arts in school.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the creator of the podcast Between Awesome & Disaster. What’s most exciting is that I get to interview comedians, musicians and performers about their craft and lives and get the chance to have a meaningful connection with people who’s work I admire. These have included Brian Fallon of The Gaslight Anthem, Chris DeMakes of Less Than Jake, Frank Turner, Tom Rhodes, and I can say that I have done most of this by myself. I am the host, engineer, editor, booker, researcher, theme song writer, and marketing department.

I’ve also come full circle and have started playing bass guitar in a pop punk band called Skip Lag.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that have helped me I think are determination, curiosity, and kindness. Determination to keep going and working hard even in the face of rejection, set backs, and my own doubts. Curiosity because that has let to me learning new skills, and increasing my knowledge base so that my work can continue to evolve. Kindness because being a joy to be around is essential to collaborative fields like show business. I have gotten jobs, and recommendations and connections through the many friends I’ve made over the years and it’s because I try to be polite and respectful to everyone I work with.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
The first thing I do is organize my thoughts, think what has to be done, when does it need to be finished and break down the steps to getting there into manageable chunks. I also try to take a bit of time every day to do something purely to relax such as read for fun, play video games even if it’s just a short bit of time it’s important to give yourself that respite.
