We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Will Kim. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Will below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Will with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I believe the fundamental source of my strong work ethic is in my genes. My grandmother, who passed away when I was an elementary school student, lived her entire life always pushing her limits to achieve the seemingly unachievable.
In addition, I am an artist, and I aspire to be a successful one. Without a high degree of work ethic, I believe it’s impossible to keep learning, improving, and inspiring. Fortunately for me, I derive my work ethic from both my family background and my passion for what I do.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I draw, paint, animate, design, and direct films. I also teach. I teach to do art and I do art to teach. I teach to inspire and I teach to get inspired. Everything I do are coincided. This is probably what I feel the most special about my job. I love telling stories, my emotions, dreams, my representations, personal, social and political issues primarily through the medium of animation.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three most important qualities, skills, and/or areas of knowledge in my field (Art/Animation & Education) are 1. Listen and Draw. Always listen to people of all ages and their stories, listen to interviews, news. People and their stories are the greatest resources of animation. And Draw on a daily basis for the observation of the people, surroundings and to visualize the stories and ideas. ALWAYS Listen and Draw!
2. Respect others. The world of art, animation, and education are smaller than what appears. You wouldn’t want to work with or for someone who doesn’t work with others and who doesn’t respect others’ opinions and vice-versa.
3. Walk, Drive, Travel, Experience and learn from relations, read, etc. – There is a difference between making an animated film about something you have the first hand experience and the one that is not.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I always look for possibilities of collaboration whether for my animation or for music for my animation film. Sometimes I work with the artists I have already worked with in the past and sometimes I look for completely new visual artist collaborator(s) and/or music composer and sound designer. I always welcome many artists’ portfolio or music reels just in case any film with the specific theme or intention overlap with the future collaborators’ approach/style.
