We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Will Saunders. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Will below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Will with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Necessity is the mother of invention I guess. Our work ethic – while of course learned in a large extent from parents, guardians, etc. – was formed in large part to life circumstances. There were no silver spoons for any of us. We had to learn on our own – for better or worse – that if you don’t work, you don’t eat; pure and simple. We learned over time, that things don’t just fall magically from the sky. If you want something done, you have to put in the work.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Loser Company is an indie/grunge/alternative rock band from Los Angeles, California.
Loser Company’s slacker indie rock vibes call out to those who’ve ever felt like they were on the losing side of life. We’re on a mission to make music infused with melancholic joy that helps people through tough times and serves as a reminder to stay humble when times are good. We invite listeners to be less alone through loss, pain, and anguish – or, as we like to say, “Lose, with us.”
Metro-Detroit childhood friends, Mas and Will, reunited again years later in California through happenstance… or perhaps fate? Destructive fires had left fertile soil for new growth. They had nothing to lose and everything to gain, so they began making music again with newfound clarity and purpose.
In December 2019, we met drummer Shawn at a Los Angeles venue and two became three – just in time for the pandemic. The subsequent isolation during the lockdown laid the groundwork for our first full length album, ‘The Floor’, The Floor will soon be fully released in 2024.
Everyone has lost something. Sometimes it takes losing everything, to realize you have everything to gain. Losing can teach us how to win. Everyone feels like a loser from time to time and we want deconstruct the pejorative nature of the term itself. If you haven’t lost, you haven’t lived. If the winners of the world run the show, maybe it’s time to give the losers a try. Losers, unite!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most important qualities that have helped us succeed as a band are persistence, passion and obstinance.
I suppose persistence and obstinance go hand-in-hand. As long as those two traits are born from a healthy passion, it’s a good thing. I can’t tell you how many people over the years have casted doubts and aspersions on what we’re trying to do. We didn’t care then and we don’t care now. Our passion for music, and our cognizance that we needed it in our lives in order to feel purposeful, have superseded any haters we’ve met along the way.
I’m not sure if persistence, passion and obstinance can be developed or improved per se. Basically – DGAF. Find something you’re passionate about and if you see it producing good in your life and/or others, go for it and don’t stop unless it’s on your own terms.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
I can’t speak for the rest of the band – but the most important thing my mom did was introduce me to rock and roll. Every car ride, every night in the house, etc,, rock was there. When I was 8 years old, she took me to see The Rolling Stones – 7th row center. Maybe she wanted to really share this world with me, or maybe she couldn’t find a babysitter. The early introduction allowed me the mental space/platform to form my own personality when it came to other forms of rock music – mainly punk rock. As she and I grew apart, as teens usually do, she died suddenly when I was 16. Freud would have a field day, but it’s quite clear that pursuing rock music has been my way of maintaining a connection with my mom and garnering her posthumous approval.
