Meet William Burnett

We were lucky to catch up with William Burnett recently and have shared our conversation below.

William, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

I believe my optimism comes from my faith in God. In my young adult years, I have truly seen how God can move in my life and it is the greatest thing. The past few months were rather difficult for me. Among other struggles of my last semester of college, I lost my grandmother in March. At first, I was so upset. Why would this happen right now? What did I do to deserve all of this right now? Although I was devastated, I knew that there was something greater in all of this. God wouldn’t bring me this far, just to leave me. Times when things just aren’t going my way, or I’m struggling in an area, I have so much faith that God will work everything out for me.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Hey! I’m William Burnett, but you might know me as WILL EZ!
I’m an up-and-coming R&B artist from Douglasville, Georgia. I’ve been singing for most of my life, but I really started performing publicly around the age of 11 or 12.

One thing that makes my craft really special to me is how hands-on I am with every part of the process. I handle a lot of my own music production and promotion. About four years ago, I taught myself how to use Logic so I could record and engineer my own tracks. I even design my own cover art and graphics.

Recently, I’ve started learning how to mix my own vocals, however I’m still sharpening those skills, so my friend Trejohn helps me out with that for now (shoutout to him haha).

I take a lot of pride in being able to bring my vision to life independently. It means a lot to know that I don’t have to rely on too many people to make my dreams a reality.

My debut EP, NOT EZ 2 SAY, drops July 12th, so be on the lookout! This project took about a year to make, all during my senior year of college, so it was a real balancing act. But honestly, it was a so much fun to create. The music captures a side of me I don’t always know how to say out loud, which is exactly where the title comes from.

This is just the beginning, and I can’t wait for y’all to hear it!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I think embracing imperfection has been one of the most valuable parts of my journey. When I listen back to some of my older recordings, I definitely cringe a little, but at the same time, I feel a deep sense of gratitude. It reminds me how far I’ve come and that I’m still growing. I’m not at my peak yet, and that excites me, there’s still so much room to grow.

Another big lesson I’ve learned is the power of asking for help. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking you have to do everything on your own, but the truth is, nobody has it all figured out. Don’t be afraid to speak up when you’re struggling. Seeking help is a strength, not a weakness.

And one last piece of advice, something a fellow music friend once told me that really stuck: Just create. Don’t get caught up in what other people might think. Art is subjective. If you love what you’re making and it feels true to you, that’s what matters most. Trust your vision and the right people will catch on!

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

One of the most meaningful things my parents have done for me, especially when it comes to my craft, is truly invest in it. Not just financially, but emotionally too. I’ve never once felt like they didn’t support what I was passionate about. In fact, sometimes they’re even more excited about my music than I am!

When I started college, they surprised me with a MacBook and recording equipment, it felt like the best gift in the world at the time, and honestly, it still means everything to me. But their support started long before that. From driving me to rehearsals, traveling with me for high school fine arts trips, and enrolling me in summer arts programs, they’ve been a great support every step of the way.

I wouldn’t be where I am today without their belief in me, and I truly can’t thank them enough for that.
